Question

Outputting audio from PS3 through HDMI to AV Receiver

Aug 13, 2011 6:27PM PDT

Hello,
I recently purchased a Sony 6.2 Channel home theater system, model HTDDW5500. I've connected my PS3 to the AV receiver via an HDMI cable. To my knowledge, HDMI is capable of processing both audio and video signals, correct? Well, I figured i'd configure the audio settings on my PS3 to output through HDMI to the receiver, but no sound is received. I've ticked on all applicable formats, yet no sound. The only way to receive sound is if I use an Optical audio cable. But the formats available under the PS3's HDMI configuration are wider and higher in sampling frequencies. Is it possible that the receiver can only decode audio through digital optical cables?

Yes.

I see this is widely discussed in both PS3 and HT groups. I think you have to go with what works.

The only issue there could be is if the HDMI cables are "first generation". Try a nice new HDMI 1.4 cable. These are under 10 bucks under the Amazon Basics brand.

thanks for your input, you have my gratitude. I'll definitely try using 1.4 cables if they're available at retailers.
