Question

Outlook starts up but not wanted

Oct 16, 2014 4:39AM PDT

Since a virus was removed from the computer, every time I try to access my email on the web, Outlook starts up. It never used to do this, and I do not want to use it. How can I stop it ?

Answer
Sounds like the MAILTO handler is "Outlook"

Change the MAILTO action or handler in the web browser. This is a basic setting/feature of many browsers so without know the OS and browser, I'll stop here.

are you using some other mail client?

If so, go into it's preference, options, or settings and set it as the default mail.

Outlook

Microsoft is always trying to force their programs on to everything.

If you never use Outlook, go to the metro screen and right click on the Outlook icon. Uninstall this program. This will stop any further interference.

If you do use outlook, you may have to go to the preferences and change the settings.

I personally don't like Outlook and I have removed it from Windows 8.1.

Delete Outlook
Oct 18, 2014 4:19AM PDT

I agree, I use Thunderbird, and its irritating when you click on a web link to email and it puts Outlook up! I can't delete it as I am a volunteer for a worldwide charity that uses the Outlook calender and sends notifications for it via email, so I have to open it to record the date in my own Calendar!!
The computer I asked help for belongs to a friend who is even less techie than me, so as I don't have it in my possession I could not give the OS details, but I will delete Outlook for her. If she does want to keep it, will it be difficult to find "MAILTO action or handler in the web browser" given in a previous reply ?

Thanks for all your help.
