Outlook shutdown problems, Windows Taskbar

Jun 25, 2005 7:44AM PDT

I am using Outlook 2003 and Windows XP Home SP2. I have a problem with Outlook loading in Windows Taskbar. It doesn't load until I open up Outlook for the first time and it will not unload. This causes problems in shutting down the PC, creating backups using the Outlook Backup utility (it won't work with Outlook open or when in the taskbar). Any program requiring Outlook to shutdown for installation hangs up and I cannot close it from the taskbar: I have to shutdown thru Task Manager. When I do so, Outlook wants to start up in safe mode when I open again or will not start again at all.

Any ideas?

Any PDA in there?

While you didn't mention it, I know of issues like this. For 2003 you need the latest patches and maybe to unplug the PDA.

PDA is Bluetooth

There is a PDA but I HotSync via a Bluetooth dongle; HotSync does load in the Task Bar. Would that affect it?

Yup.

I noticed that ActiveSync keep a hidden Outlook executing in the background. Before the patches, it might not exit on shutdown and have to be forcibly ended.

Your PDA support line should have noted this issue.

ActiveSync used with Palm HotSync?
Jun 26, 2005 6:42AM PDT

I am using the Palm Tungsten T3 with HotSync. Is ActiveSync used with Palm HotSync??

No, but the same issue.

The hotsync may be syncing email and the same issue occurs. You didn't note if office/outlook is all patched up.

Problem is solved.

I had patched up Outlook 2003 but it didn't help. I then looked at my add-ins and found some new items: DCCExtensions among them. When I searched this item I found it linked to WinFax Pro and known conflicts with Outlook. I uninstalled WinFax Pro and (unfortunately for scientific analysis) also uninstalled Outlook Backup utility. When I rebooted, the problem was gone. Not sure which solved it, but I didn't really need either.
