Outlook on windows 8 won't recognise my password

Aug 24, 2013 10:25PM PDT

I can get passed log in on my laptop even though i am entering the correct password I keep getting the message password incorrect. Works fine on another computer. I tried outlook support and they tried to fob me off with a package that would cost 60 pounds. i need this asap as i have documents that I need on the computer.

Which Outlook?
Aug 25, 2013 7:06AM PDT

At the office we are still using Outlook 2003 and there are versions from 97, 2007, 2010 and now a web site called outlook.com

The outlook.com site is a bit of a mess as it is free but support costs.

to what Bob asks...

You can get passed log in on your computer, or you cannot? Which is it?

If you can log in to your computer then your documents should be accessible.

If you cannot log into your computer then how did you set it up initially? Did you set up a Windows 8 account through Windows Live? If so then perhaps the username and password you used for Windows Live is different to this 'outlook' you are using.

Password not accepted
Aug 25, 2013 9:49PM PDT

Hi Bob, sorry, I cannot get passed log in as in order to log into my computer i must enter my password, which is @outlook.com. it wont accept it and just keeps saying password incorrect. I then changed my password in windows live and it still doe not work. I therefore cannot access my documents on my computer or anything else for that matter.

What's the relation between 'outlook' and 'documents on the computer'. Outlook has mails and contacts only, and practically nobody calls those documents.
If it works fine on another computer, can't you access your documents there?

Outlook password not recognised
Aug 25, 2013 9:54PM PDT

The relation is that I need to log into my computer using a @outlook.com password and my computer wont accept password. I therefore cannot log into my laptop to access my documents. And no my documents are not saved on another computer.

Re: documents

The three ways that could be used:
1. If both your computers are in a home network and configured for shared access to the folder these documents are located in, then it might be possible to access those documents via the network.
2. If you have a backup on another medium, you'll find your documents there.
3. If you boot from a Linux disk (that's free), you can move all those documents to your external hard disk or USB-stick

Since there is no need to be online to logon to a Windows 8 computer, I doubt if your Windows password is synchronised with the password of your Microsoft account on Microsoft servers without first logging in with your old password.

Then see my third suggestion above: use Linux to get those files off.
There's even a fourth: use ntpasswd from http://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/ to remove or change the Windows password.

Did I already write it's a "best practice" to have at least 2 different Windows (adeministrator) accounts on your PC. Then if one fails, the other most likely still works. But it's too late for that now. And simply going back to factory conditions (using the recovery disks you got or made) might very well delete all your documents you forgot to backup, so that's not a good solution at the moment.

Needless to say that having a backup on another medium (USB-stick or external disk) of everything you don't want to lose is a "best practice" also.
