Outlook hangs when I get an email with attachment

Does anyone know why Outlook 2003 would hang for about 30 - 45 seconds when I get an attachment? It also hangs when there is an embedded image in the sender's signature. I've downloaded the most recent updates, but I have not had any luck at all. I've archived quite a few emails to make sure my pst file hasn't gotten too big, but that didn't help either. Any suggestions?
