Outlook Express Spell check problem

Dec 1, 2008 9:54PM PST

My Outlook Express (XP Professional) spell check has suddenly stopped functioning properly. It thinks the language is French and it suggests French substitutes for even the most common words, i.e. "title" shows as incorrect and recommends "tille". When I go to options and click the "spelling" tab French is the only option shown.

This has occurred since a hardware problem...many blue screens..caused by faulty memory chip which has been replaced.

Before sending machine for repair I tried condensing my e-mail files and exporting them to a memory stick. Since then I've also gotten, among other weird issues, a corrupted address book which has reverted back to a status from about two years ago leaving all adds and deletes since then lost.

How can I get the spell check to function in English?

To fix this, one question.

What gave OE the spell check feature? It's not included with XP or OE so what did you install to add spell check? If it's Office, uninstall and reinstall that.

I did update my Windows Office from 2000 to 2007 about the same time this problem occured. I've checked and Word/Outlook/Excel are Ok checking in English.

I will try re-installing.

Thanks,
RJ

Reinstall may not help.

Cannot repair Outlook Express 6 Spell Check
Nov 5, 2009 2:43AM PST

Like others, my OE is only in French after installing Microsoft Office 2007. I have Windows XP 2002 and when I try to fix the problem with provided free spell check links, I get error messages about not finding the file location.

I had the same issue that you did. I just Googled the problem and came up with this dandy spell checker that adds itself right into OE and you are back in business.
