Outlook Express running slow new details

Sep 5, 2007 1:36PM PDT

I've been working on my Outlook Express issue for a few days, trying everything I can to fix it.

I decided today to setup my Outlook Express on another computer that I don't use OE on. When I did this, I noticed a few odd things happening.

1). On the computer that I usually use if I checked the size of .dbx folder (the files in the store folder) it says that the size of it 2.46gb. I came to the conclusion that this was my problem because Microsofts website says it only supports 2gb.

I didn't think about it at the time, but I saved that filed over to disc, with no problem... Now that I think about it, the disc would not be large enough to hold that file.

When I put those files onto my other computer, I then went into to check the size of it, on that computer it is saying that the size is on 74mb.

I'm not really sure why it is showing such a huge difference in size.

2). I imported my messages, address book and settings onto OE on that computer and it worked perfectly. It was just as fast as if there was nothing in there. I noticed, however, that my file was missing that had all folders from E-H. I thought that was odd, especially since I selected to import all folders. So I decided to try importing just that folder, I went in and the folders for E-H was not listed... So I went into the actual folder to check and all of my folders A-Z were there, including the ones missing in OE. So now I'm wondering why that folder will not import.

I'm thinking that it looks like the folder, or one within it, is corrupt or damaged and that could possibly be why my OE is so slow. I'm pretty usre it wouldn't be the folder E-H, but most likely one within it because the other folder was created after the problem occured.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this, or any ideas what I should try?

Thanks!

RE: that the size is on 74mb

Did you by chance mean "740MB"? If so, it may well be that 740MB is the max for that particular CD. OR if in fact 74MB, perhaps that was the available room on the CD. The only CD sizes I know of run about 600-740 MB. To get the entire 2.46GB on one disc would require a DVD-R or RW. Perhaps you should backup and empty, or just empty the .dbx folder.

From what I can tell, everything is there.

I don't have that computer with me right now, but I will check again to make sure. I am pretty sure that it said 74mb... All I know is that when I burned it to disc, it didn't say anything didn't go on.

From what I could tell, with a quick glance, all the files were there.

I will check again to verify, but that is what I am thinking.

I rechecked and according to that computer

the files are just over 72mb. I know when I burned the disc, it was a new disc, there was still space to add more data to it, but all I put on there was my files and then my address book.

It also shows that all 473 folders are there. All my folders are showing up, but the folders for E-H are not there, as well as the folder titled "Keep e-mails E-H"

It seems to me like one of those folders may be the culprit, but I haven't been able to verify which one it may be.

Thanks again

.dbx folder

1. The article [Q313055] states that Outlook Express mail folders, e-mail messages, and Address Book are missing after you upgrade and occurs because the Windows XP file structure is different and the files for Outlook Express are no longer in the same location and this same anomaly can be experienced as explained in the article [Q295965] which states that when OE is started, some existing folders (Inbox, Drafts, and so on) or personal subfolders may be missing and can be caused if the file "Folders.dbx" (the Indexer) is damaged or corrupt. To resolve this issue, rename or simply delete the Folders.dbx file for the impacted identity, and then start OE which rebuilds it. Please be advised that this same anomaly may occur if this file for certain other folders is also either damaged or corrupted. This Knowledge Base article also provides a step-by-step procedure to help you find your previous mail, folders, and Address Book, and import them back into Outlook Express.

Hint: You may on occasion be able to save hard drive space simply by deleting the Folders.dbx file and letting OE recreate it.

CAVEAT: The Folders.dbx file however keeps track of Active News Group Subscriptions too. Should this be important to you, do not delete it. If you do, that information will be lost. Again be advised, the file Folders.dbx is the file which categorizes and maintains the default mail Store, the user created OE folders, and default OE files. If a certain file or folder is moved or copied into the mail Store inlieu of using the correct Import method, the Folders.dbx would not be aware of this change and therefore consider the replaced ?.dbx file or folder as corrupted. To make sure things are in sync if copying or moving either into the mail Store, delete the Folders.dbx file before starting OE to ensure that a new and accurate one is created. Even afterwards, perhaps simply deleting it and opening OE will fix you right up. Should the system have asked, "Overwrite . . ."? when a copy or move was performed, anything previously at that point was lost.

I just got a chance to read those articles
Sep 6, 2007 3:18AM PDT

I'm not sure if they will apply to me.

I did not upgrade to XP, this computer came with XP on it originally.

Also, in the account that is affected, the folders are not missing. The folders just never showed up when I put them onto a different computer with OE.

I guess I will try to change all the file names under that folder and see if that fixes the solution, if so then I know it has to be one of them, I just have to figure out which one.

Thanks for the info!

I just reread the information you gave me
Sep 6, 2007 8:26AM PDT

and I tried change the Folders.dbx file. I first tried it on the account I have created for use of practice before I try something on my main account. It seemed to help. So I then proceeded to do the same thing in my main account. It may be slightly faster, but not by much.

Thanks!

When I turned on the computer this morning
Sep 7, 2007 2:25AM PDT

I noticed that this morning when I turned my computer back on that the OE seems to be working a little faster. I would say the time is cut in half, but it is still not really fast.

Any other suggestions for me to try?

Thanks!
