Outlook Express Receiving E-mail-Morgan

Aug 12, 2004 1:59AM PDT

System Info: IE 6 SP6.1, Win 98SE, 700 meg, Outlook Express 6, Zone Alarm Pro 5.1 with e-mail protection turned off, Norton System Works 2003 with e-mail scanning turned on.

When I first turn my computer on and start up Outlook Express, it begins receiving new mail and freezes. There is no error message, it just freezes. Generally, I reboot once and it is OK. Sometimes I have to reboot twice. This happens almost every time. Advice please.

Remember that Zone Alarm on dos based machines don't protect such a machine from outside attack unless the machine has a trojan installed. It will however eat into those 64 thousand byte resource pools you can read about in the Memory Article at http://www.aumha.org/articles.htm and since we don't have anyway to expand that space, one needs to test it with ZA uninstalled to see if that's the issue.

Also, the tool IEFIX you find with google.com may fix it.

In closing, if your mailboxes are on the large size of 1 GB or more, you may be feeling that issue too.

I tried the IEFIX and moved everything out of my mail boxes to reduce their size. I have had Zone Alarm for some time and it did not affect the e-mail previously.

Still freezes up.

Next, lookup OLEXP BACKUP about how to save and restore OE content. With that, you can delete all OE content safely.

If that doesn't cure it, then look up IERADICATOR. If you install another browser, then you can wipe out IE/OE, and reinstall IE/OE and avoid an OS install.

Thanks for the info. I'll try that. However, in the meantime, I got on the Symantic Support and found "Document ID:2003082012355706 Last Modified:05/19/2004". I followed the instructions to permit Zone Alarm to allow access by all the Antivirus progrm files and it seemed to work.
