Outlook Express problem with photo attachment

Mar 15, 2005 4:50AM PST

When I create a message and attach a photo in an email the photo also ends up in the message body. I am not placeing it there it goes into the message by itself.
How do I stop this from occuring?

That's the way Outlook Express works.

It displays the picture attachement in the mail. You can't influence it. But if anybody receives it in MS Outlook or any less creative email-client, he sees it as an attachment. It only is an attachment, but Outlook Express is so kind to open and show it when you read the message, like it or not.

Thank you Kees

No way to turn it off is not what I wanted to hear. Is there a way to make the unwanted copy smaller?

Don't know of a way, and I'm not the only one.

Thank you, this is the best help session I have ever had. Feels good to know I could not get rid of the photos because it was not set up to be done.

So, now I feel helpless with a reason.

Thanks again, Rick

you can also

If you are using Outlook Express and want the picture shown, Type a word in the email before you click on the mountain icon to add it. This way the picture will show automatically. It will also be like an attachment. If you don't want the picture to be shown, then click on insert and file attachment.

Hope this helps

Try the following...
Mar 16, 2005 1:39AM PST

Open OE then click on the Tools menu.
1. Select Options
2. Select Send tab
3. You will see that you have HTML checked as the Mail Sending Format--(uncheck it and you will no longer send pictures as anything but attachments--they will not show up within the message body but neither will stationary or text formatting if used).
4. Assuming you do still want HTML formatting, leave it checked but click the HTML Settings button
5. UNCHECK the Send pictures with messages checkbox and OK your way back out of the dialog boxes.

Attached pictures should now only show up as attached and not within the body.

An alternative to Edwards excellent idea.

There's no need to set the default for outgoing messages to text only in stead of html.
You can have html as a default for all your messages, but change it to text format in a message you want to attach a picture to. When composing the message, choose Format in the message window, then click Plain Text in stead of Rich Text (html). Plain text can't contain images so necessarily it will become an attachment.

In html-mode there might be a difference, as indicated by Pudgy One, between the effects of 'Insert Attachment' and 'Insert Picture', but I'm not sure of that. You can try yourself. But I'm sure, like Edward, that a plain text message will NEVER contain a picture inline. In fact, I logged on to tell you so, but I saw that Edward had done so already.

Hope this helps.
