Outlook Express Problem

Dec 4, 2004 12:12AM PST

What does the following message mean and what can I do to fix it: Please configure your mail client to use authentication. I have opened my OE, gone to tools, accounts, properties, put check marks on various areas on Server tab regarding 'authentication' and nothing. The message is returned by my AVG7, but only when sending messages to some companies. If I send a message to my Yahoo account, or to other people, no problem. Also, the area regarding the 'remember password' is grayed out, how can I fix this. Thanks in advance for your assistance. Win XP Pro SP2

Eddie, don't know about this but some had problems with AVG 7 when using ZoneAlarm firewall. If using ZA go to the "E-mail Protection" tab and turn "Basic MailSafe Settings" off. Then see if the problem persists.

It might be a good idea for me to have ZA, but for now just using win firewall that came with sp2. I had noticed before that 'too' many pop up blockers and virus programs seemed to conflict, so I disabled most. Thanks for suggestion Glenn.

Well, I've done it now. Somehow I really messed up. Thinking that maybe my AVG7 was causing my problems, I uninstalled it and removed the win sp2 firewall settings that I had done per their instructions. I than tried to open OE. Big problem. It asks for my sign in, and it is already displayed correctly with even the check mark in the 'remember password' but it will not let me in. I decided to try a 'system restore' and 'all' of my restore points are gone. How did that happen. I tried the tools, options, properties & accounts things, and their all correct. Would appreciate any help. Thanks. Eddie

Panic resolved. After I logged in "correctly", my OE is working now. Just to test, I reinstalled AVG7, but without the special instructions for the SP2 firewall settings, and my OE continues to work properly. This problem all started when I went in and set the settings as per AVG on the firewall. I thought that was the problem, but was afraid to mess with their instructions. Only odd problem is how I lost my 'system restore' points. Maybe, uninstall of AVG7 had something to do with that. Hmmmmm. Anyway, email program is working, and with AVG7, which I have to have.
