Outlook Express not protected from Viruses !!!

Jul 7, 2010 5:36AM PDT

Hello:

I need help if possible regarding my AVAST program.

I went into Outlook Express to check my E-mail and there was a strange E-mail, where I had to "Block Sender" and delete. Outlook Express is not like Yahoo mail, where you have to click in order to see your E-mail, but Outlook Express mail is already open and leaves you naked for Viruses to infect your PC, so;

After I closed OE, there was a message from AVAST on my desktop that said this:

AVAST has detected a secure connection from your mail program (process msimn.exe) to the POP server 67.195.135.148 (yahoo,com). This type of connection cannot be checked for viruses. Please disable SSL/TLS in your mail client so that the Mail Scanner can scan your mail. The Mail Scanner will provide the SSL/TLS security itself, so;

After closing that message box, I went over to my Yahoo mail to find the last message I received from CNET helping with another Topic I had posted, but before I could click on anything, another AVAST message popped up that said, Trojan Horse Blocked.

I immediately ran a AVAST Quick Scan and no infections were found.

I also ran Malwarebytes and no infections were found.

Can someone tell me how to set up the AVAST E-mail Client for OE to scan my E-mail ???

I have a DELL
Systems Type: Dimension 3000
Win-XP Home Edition

Thank U !!!

I click on the icon in the system tray, then in the 'Console' I select Internet mail in the left column and click on start. Then if I right click that Avast icon again and set my cursor on the "Pause service" I see Internet mail mentioned as active.
That's it.

Hello Kees:

I don't see any thing of what your talking about. I forget to make mention, I have the FREE 30 Trial version of AVAST and there is nowhere I can set up the Mail Client for OE and because I can not submit a SNAPSHOT of what I see, it makes it hard to see what your seeing and saying.

Let's fix OE first . . .

You obviously have OE set to show the message in the preview pane. Which, of course, opens the message, and opens you up to infection. In OE, click View, Layout, and uncheck preview pane. Close OE and reopen it. Now, you can see what's there, and open the message if you want. If I see a sender I don't recognize I just delete.

I've never used Avast, but I do use AVG free, which has an easy email scanner configuration.

Hello Coryphaeus:

I never thought to just close the Preview Panel in OE. But I got all of this taken care of by AVAST Tech Support. They configured the E-mail Shield in AVAST, so hopefully, I should be good to go.

Thanks everyone for your help !!!
