Outlook Express E-mail PPT Attachment - no warning box

Aug 9, 2007 11:37AM PDT

XP Pro - SP2 - Outlook Express

Sometime ago - some strange force compelled me to uncheck the box that says "Always ask before opening this file" for a PPT attachment. Now PPT attachments automatically open without the Warning Dialog Box. I have gone into Folder Options/File Types/Advanced/Confirm - made sure that the box is checked. Still doesn't matter. I have tried to attack this several ways - still no go. How do I get the dialog warning box back?? - Any help here ??

Tomron -

This is the third time I have followed these instructions by three separate people, and unfortunately the result is still the same. It has not fixed the problem !! - Why, I do not know - one was from Ramesh, the other from Dwight Blackburn, and now this one. I'll try anything, and maybe, just maybe, its something simple that I am (not) doing; I have followed this procedure step by step multiple times - with the same ultimate result - no warning box and PPT opens without warning.

Any other thoughts - ??

You can remove the file type from the list and then when you click on it you'll get the question,

what do you want to open this with?

go to control panel

click on Folder Options

click on file types

go down the list and look for PPT and PPS and then click on delete. The next time you try to open it, it will ask you what program to use.

Hope this is what you're looking for.

Rick:

Will try that - delete both PPT and PPS, or just the one having trouble with? - then when asks what file to open with - re-attach ?

Thanks - John

It is possible that the registry is protected and ...

your account does not have the proper credentials to make the changes.

This link offers the same step-by-step that you say you have had no success with (you are selecting and highlighting PPT before clicking that Advanced button) and it also offers instructions for simply making the registry edit yourself.
The "File Download" dialog box appears if you download a file after you click to clear the "Always ask before opening this type of file" check box in Windows XP Service Pack 2 or in Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/905703

If you try the edit and receive any error messages get back with us and tell us the EXACT message(s) you receive.

This next link offers a handy dandy tool that sets all Microsoft Office files to require confirmation before opening. The link to the tool is in the article. The tool also allows you to reverse your changes if desired.

http://www.kbalertz.com/Feedback.aspx?kbNumber=238918
Microsoft has released the Microsoft Office Document Open Confirmation Tool. This tool can be used to help protect you by always requiring confirmation before opening any of the following Microsoft Office document types in Internet Explorer and Outlook

Now you have additional choices.

Registry Protection ??
Aug 10, 2007 4:38AM PDT

Edward - Re: registry protection - this is a single user -home/office machine not on a network - so as far as I know we're in Admin mode already (yes?).

The links that you mention seem to make sense - I will perform the functions and report back. Any error messages will be saved and info forwarded on to you.

Thanks again for the alternative suggestions.

Even single user machines....

And even then logged in a "administrator" must respect "rights" and "ownership" entries on FILES, REGISTRY and more.

I've read more than once where people dismissed this since they were not networked but then we get to go over this area again and again till they catch up with this OS.

Thanks for the tip - will make sure that am in administrator mode if and when I go playing around in the files/reg -

Good to know someone is trying to keep me out of trouble.

It takes more than administrator mode.
Aug 11, 2007 5:56AM PDT

Sorry I guess I was unclear. Even an administrator can not delete a file if the rights are not proper. The same goes for the REGISTRY.

I know this sounds odd but this is not like it was back in Windows 98.

Who knows? You don't mention how many accounts have been created nor what the accounts are nor even which of the many possible accounts you are using.

If you open a command prompt (Start | Run then type CMD.EXE and click OK) you can type the following in and when you press the enter/return key it will tell you the account then the applet in Control Panel can tell you what type of account it is.
The command to type is - echo %userprofile%

After pressing the enter key you will see something similar to:
C:\Documents and Settings\vanman4005 (the last will be the actual account)

If you discover you have been using a limited account go back to square one and log in as Admin before making the correction.

Edward -

Finally got around to having some peace and quiet - logged onto the MS Download site (in Firefox - had to view in IE Tab in order to "save" file) - Saved file - opened (ran) exe - completed in about 6 nano-seconds. Went to ppt attachment - still automatically opens without any warning box. ???? Tried second time - still same thing.

Sooooo, ???????

Still here in PA -
