Bob, did my questions sound silly ? I was trying to acertain what is meant by 'compact', as computerspeak gives different meanings to ordinary words. Is that the same as 'compresion' as in drive compression ? So OE can make the messages file smaller ? What if I want to access the 'compacted' messages again ? And..what is 'wasted space' in this context ? Thanks.
christy.
I think that's the question. Sometimes I have to reply with the answer to the first question, even if it seems to be obvious to some, it won't to others.
About "Compact messages." In short, as you delete messages, OE's method of storing these on the hard disk in the file doesn't cause the files that store the message to shrink. So it runs some extra routines to shrink the used disk space by compacting the message "database."
It's not COMPRESSION like you may think about with PKZIP or WINZIP. It's really some message that you deleted that is in the message database that is still there, but marked as "deleted."

Thanks, Bob.
When I delete messages from the Inbox, they end up at 'Deleted Items' So, even if I remove items from the Inbox, that space is still being 'occupied' unless that space is 'compacted' ? Likewise for the deleted items file and other OE .dbx files ? And if I do not delete the messages, there will be no compaction and the .dbx files will grow in size ? Thanks.
