outlook express

Mar 8, 2004 8:35PM PST

I am unable to send messages with outlook express. No problem with receiving. Have tried almost everything.
Every once in a blue moon I am able to send one then when I log back on unable to send. Have noticed that my settings have been switched. I keep resetting them, but somehow they end up changed. I have Microsoft Outlook installed as well, but unable to send messages there also. Do I need to uninstall one or the other or do something else? I am running XP. (outlook express 6)
Thanks,
m

Your problem appears to be with the server end at your ISP.

Make sure you have the correct settings.
If they are changed that is why you cannot send emails.

Why not test with another email account to see if that works?

Or contact your ISP tech support.

If you are using a router you may have to use the IP address instead of POP & SMTP.

Is your email from a web-based server like Hotmail or from a Cable or DSL ISP?

You did not provide sufficient info for anyone to make a more informed answer.

I have tried support with ISP and what they offered did not work. I went to some web sites for support, not sure which one gave instructions re: the router. I was not able to or did not understand all that was involved with these instructions. I do not know anything about routers any help would be appreciated. I am able to use other email accounts and they work fine, but they do not have free email scanning and or do not offer some extras I prefer to use. I do not understand how I can send mail one day and then unable to repeat the process again. Something is wrong.

Can you explain a bit more about the problem ? "cannot send" tells nothing about the problem. Any error messages ? What happened when you send ? As for the 'switch' in settings, what settings ? To what extend are they switched ? Do you use any anti virus ? Fire wall ? If so, which one ?
Try support at your ISP--it may be their problem.

Now I am having trouble getting this reply to "go". Perhaps it is too long, for that reason I will try to divide it into 2 replies.

Cannot send means: when I write an email message and try to send it I get a
"failed" remark as in the execution failed. An error message of
"no error #" appears followed by a series of 0000...and cf (not
exact). I have contacted my provider and all I keep getting is "how
to's" regarding setting up email, access numbers, location, making sure I
use pop & smtp, etc. I have followed all recommendations from server, Norton
Antivirus etc, etc. I use netzero dial up and can send and receive email fine
through web mail. I want to use Outlook Express for email so I can scan all
incoming email with antivirus program Norton. AOL was installed by Dell for a
free trial basis and is still active. I can send and receive email on AOL
without problems. I know I cannot be logged onto AOL and use Outlook Express at
the same time. I only try to use Outlook Express with Netzero. I am running XP.
Sorry to be sooooooooo loooooooong winded, but you and others needed more exact
details. If this doesn't answer your question, please ask again. I appreciate
any info or help provided. Once in a great while I have been able to
"send" mail with "Outlook Express", but next time I try same
problems return. I have no clue why. ISP has given me instructions to follow and
with that I was able to determine that the problem existed with them since the
connection was not there.
Thanks,
m

? I was expecting that you would provide the exact and full error message.

? Can you share the details on how the settings were "switched" ?

? You mentioned you were once able to send, so the problem may be with your ISP. Sometimes, they can 'block' a port, accidently or otherwise, which makes you unable to send.

? Try disabling the e-mail protection at your anti-virus program and see whether you can send.

? Have you also have the XP fire wall activated ? Try having only one fire wall on.

These are the "errors" I received today. I tried something different, reason for 2 different sets of errors.Maybe this will help.

Solutions for 2000 or NT may also work with XP.

I have already disabled the firewall.

I will try disabeling the email on Norton.

The switching occurs automatically. As I indicated previously, I type in the dial up phone #'s, but when I go back to confirm, the numbers have changed to 2222.

At Connection>Settings, try unchecking "Always connect using....". You will not need to fill in the phone number. That area will be greyed out. You can choose which of your accounts to use to send via the 'From' drop down list, and you will be connected via your default connection if you have more than one ISP. However, some ISP will require that their connection be used to contact their mail server, in which case, make that the default.

When you try to send your messages, do they go to the OUTBOX and just sit there?

Yes, until I click on send all, receive all or send and receive all. That's where the problem is. Only receive works not "send".
