Outlook Email File Attachments

May 28, 2004 10:42AM PDT

I am using Office 2000. Whenever I attach a .jpg file to a new message, the recepient cannot open the file because it has been changed from a .jpg format to a .dat file. But, if I reply to their message and attach the images again, they are received in .jpg format and everything is fine. Has anyone ever had a similar problem with any suggestions? Thanks.

Is the attachment called winmail.dat? If so, it's likely that you are sending messages in Rich Text Format to folks whose e-mail programs don't recognize RTF. You need to change the message default format to plain text or HTML. Check out this Microsoft Kbase article for instructions and more details - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;197064&Product=out2K

Hope it helps

I'm glad that cleared up the original poster's problem, but I've still got the issue. I'm running Outlook 2000 with all service packs installed on Win2K Pro. After making sure my send format was set to plain text (which is was originally) I still get complaints from a few of the people on my email list that I am sending emails with nothing but a winmail.dat attachment.

If I get onto my email account using Outlook Express 6 (Outlook 2000 is used for my work Exchange account on the laptop) there are no complaints about any winmail.dat attachments.

I do seem to remember that back when I first got Outlook 2000 that I was the victim of receiving several of these winmail.dat attachments. Just wondering why the problem suddenly started cropping up when using SMTP/POP email with Outlook 2K on my home machine even though it had been working flawlessly before I installed XP Pro SP2...

Could THAT be the problem???
