Outlook doesnt open

Feb 28, 2010 8:39PM PST

Hi
I have Windows Vista on my PC and i use Outlook as my mail client with hotmail accounts. It was working fine for the last 6 months but now refuses to open. It says 'Outlook didnt open correctly last time do you want to open in safe mode?'. 'Yes' or 'no' both results in 'cant open and windows is trying to look for a solution'. But 'nothing is found'.
I have tried 'repairing' outlook And have also tried reinstalling frm the disc. Hasnt worked.
Can you help pls
Bobby

Does it work in a newly created Windows account?

That circumvents bad user level settings and corrupted user files (like your .pst file). For a new Windows user, the settings are default and the user files are fresh (and empty).

There always is a way out by buying a new PC. But often there is a cheaper or easier way. Start with answering the question in my post above: "Does it work correctly in a newly created Windows account?"

sorry i did not read the subject line and only the body
Mar 1, 2010 10:33PM PST

I have another account on the computer - not much used. I mustve configured outlook and one of my hotmail accounts on it once upon a time. I tried opening it there and it did open, and i can see really old mails. however when i try to synch it it opens the username password box and then the synch dialogue box but it doesnt connect.

I created another windows account and have tried to open and then configure a couple of hotmail accounts but it fails to 'log on to server' and asks me to try again.

Hope you can help
cheers

So your original problem ...

isn't occurring in this new Windows account. That shows that it's a problem in your account. I'd start with renaming the .pst-file and see if that makes a difference.

.pst file
Mar 2, 2010 7:50PM PST

Hi

SOrry to be so dense but where can i find this .pst file and how do i know that the one that comes up on search is the one associated with the account in question.

Also just to clarify that in both instances that I mentioned - existing second account and the new account I created, I didnt get to the final stage of receiving and sending emails.

Thanks for your help

Re: pst-file

That should be the only .pst file in your Windows-profile (your Documents and Settings). If there's more than one, rename all.

This is the files, in fact, that you should include in your regular and periodic backup. Or don't you make a backup of your contacts and mail, because you don't mind losing that data?

And just to clarify, once you get Outlook running in your current profile it's time to see if it will send and receive as it used to do.

Sorry for delay in getting back
Mar 9, 2010 9:27PM PST

I am sorry I did a *.pst search in my Windows profile but couldnt find the file. I even tried looking in the Windows and Office folder but was unsuccessful.

Pls can you point me in the right direction for this. Also once I find and rename the file, will a new one be created if Outlook opens OK.

Once again thanks for your help

best
