Outlook Displays Only Hyperlinks In Received Messages

Jun 19, 2010 8:59AM PDT

Office Version:Office 2007 Operating System:Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit Antivirus program:ESET Smart Security 4

I sucessfully created my e-mail accounts POP/SMTP and am able to send ok. When I receive a message, all I get is a lot of blank white space and hyperlinks that have nothing to do with the actual message. I also have Windows Mail installed and configured and received messages are ok in it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

A test.

If you send yourself an ordinary text based email, (no images, no links), does that message display correctly when you receive it back?

I sometimes get similar emails where it 'appears' there is only white space, but my Thunderbird email software blocks HTML type web-based emails from downloading anything from the internet in case it is suspect. But Thunderbird offers me a button to "Download remote content", and if I choose to do that, then the full email appears.

I wonder if Outlook 2007 has a similar option.

I have not had this problem in the past with Outlook. Your suggestion to send myself a message did not change anything. I have booted in Safe Mode to see if that changed anything. No luck with that either.

I am also using Windows Mail and I receive a properly formatted message in it. I sent a friend an attachment of a Windows Mail message and the same message (the screwy one) from Outlook. Both messages displayed "normal" to her, i.e. no blank white space with hyperlinks.

I have since installed Office Professional 2010 hoping the upgrade to Outlook 2010 would fix the problem. It did not, and in fact, crashed my Dell computer.

I am at my wits end and very frustrated, but not sure who to be frustrated with. This is the 2nd forum I have used. Microsoft Answers did not have a soultion either.

Do you happen to have activated ...

something like "real-time Outlook incoming mail scan" in ESET?

I do. I have used ESET for years without any problems. I disabled the "real time scan" and it did not change anything. This problem started when I had to re-install Office 2007 after having problems with a corrupted operating system (Vista Ultimate 64 bit) on my 8 month old Dell XPS Laptop.

Please refer to the above post for additional information.

Thanks for any and all help.

I ran (or tried to run) Office Diagnostics, but it wouldn't launch. I am up-to-date on all patches and downloads and I don't use any browser but the latest version if IE.

The suggestion that the operating system may still be corrupt got me to thinking. I installed Office 2007 on another laptop (HP) also running Vista Ultimate 64 bit. I chose an e-mail that would not display properly on the Dell Laptop and it displays completely normal on the HP Laptop.

I also ran Tune-up Utilities 2010 and it suggest that there may be problems with the hard drive.

I'm not sure what to do now. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

That it's OS repair tools are less than reliable. Sorry if that offends its maker but that's a problem.

The fact that Office diagnostics didn't launch is a clue but not one we can point to any specific cure. Let's try this -> http://grok.lsu.edu/Article.aspx?articleId=4187

OK, that's how to run it but when it doesn't launch I go digging for more clues. I clear the EVENT VIEWER then try to launch it again. Back to the EVENT VIEWER and hope it has some entry for me to research.

I Agree-But I'm Stuck With It

I ran Event Viewer (took me awhile to find it) and on the "System" category this is what it gives me under the "General" Tab. Now I am completely unfamiliar with Event Viewer, but this looks suspicious to me.

The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume OS.

I ran Chkdsk but it ran so fast i didn't get the info except for some sort of "errors".
