Outlook 2007 and opening messages

My husband has a Dell XPS 410 computer running Windows XP SP2 and Office 2007. Recently he's had a problem opening E-mail attachments in Outlook 2007. He's either taken to the preview pane and nothing shows, or nothing shows at all. He can't recall making any changes to his settings or preferences, although he did get a few occurrences of "This program had to close because of etc., etc., etc"

Has this happened to anyone else, and/or what's the fix?
