Outlook 2003 locks up if I try to create a new email

Oct 18, 2007 4:04AM PDT

HP Pavillion a730n, XP Home, SP2, Pentium 4

Outlook 2003 works fine to read e-mail, launches quick no problem. If I click new to make an email the small box displays indicating outlook is opening but then it freezes. Any ideas if I changed a setting not knowing it? I haven't changed anything for a while.

running Outlook in safe mode, by type outlook /safe in the Start>Run window or the command box. Does that make a difference?

yes, however initially in safe mode I got a message saying the syntak or format of the reg entry is incorrect. after pushing OK a couple of times in that box it opened in safe mode and would create a new message fine.

If it doesn't tell which registry entry ...

this is difficult to remedy. Things to try now:
1. Create a new Windows XP account and see if it works there in normal mode and/or gives the same error in Safe Mode. If it's an error in the user part of the registry, it will work in a new account.

2. Do a repair install of Office from the Office CD.
3. Uninstal Outlook and reinstall it again, also from the Office CD.
One of these 2 might reset a system wide error.

Not sure at all it will help.
