Outlook 2002 & Excel attachments

Oct 1, 2004 3:02AM PDT

Why can't I open Excel attachements (not Word, PDF's, etc.) by double clicking. If I do, it launches Excel but not the file. Only if I save it first, can I then open it up? I'm very frustrated!

This issue was noted with Excel 97 and Windows XP and versions of Outlook. There is no cure for that one.

The workaround is to save the Excel sheet and then open it.

ok, thanks. but it didn't occur until a month back. I've turned of every security, anti-virus, spamware, etc. restarted - the whole drill. What do you think? p.s. thanks for the quick reply

I think that Microsoft isn't going to fix Excel 97 on XP. I also have seen it work, then fail. Go figure?

Bob mentions Excel 97 and Windows XP. You mention Outlook 2002 and no OS. And you don't seem to disagree.

Can I conclude you have Windows XP, Excel 97 and Outlook 2002 combined? Upgrading to Excel 2002 should do the trick then.

Yes, that can also be a problem. Mixing the Office versions has created some really oddball problems. Try the workaround of saving the attachment then opening it.

http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/esecup.htm notes the SECURITY ISSUES that you can tinker with to see if that helps.

" In Outlook 2002, end users can allow access to particular file attachment types that the security features normally block. However, administrators can block this customization with the new security form for Outlook 2002. "

Thanks, that's been the drill since it began happening. It's just that it's a lengthy process, esp. when it began happening all of a sudden.

You are all WRONG and this being a bug

This is something that is put in place to protect the users from themselves. The reason for this is because when you open a workbook attachmet and edit it, if you only click Save (not Save-as) when exiting, it doesn't actually save your changes even though it appears to have. Once you close the workbook, all of your changes are gone... forever. This is a feature that can be disable however. The following article specifically shows that...

The issue isn't editing and it saving the changes, Excel didn't even launch.

You may want to take more time and research this again.
