Outlook 2002--disable preview pane

by Marie Boyer / June 11, 2005 8:34 PM PDT

I took the on-line cnet "defeat spyware" course. The course recommended disabling the preview pane in Outlook. (I have seen Grif recommend the same recently). How do you do this?

go to view then current view. Uncheck "messages with preview". I have mine set for messages or the first choice.

That was easy. Thanks.

It was under "view" in mine as well. But all I did was click "preview pane" and it disabled it. I did not have your options. Thanks!

Why do you disable preview pane?

A few reasons.

1. The preview pane is "exploitable." Just like Internet Explorer, a script can execute if you preview the email.

2. I noted how spammers can test if your email is live in the Virus and Security forum if you preview or open the email.

In closing, be sure to turn off the preview in the Deleted folder as well.
