Outlook 2000 tasks

Jan 12, 2005 3:57AM PST

I have put xp on my computer and re-installed office 2000. Now, when i receive task requests i get an error "can't open this item. Outlook cannot do this action on this type of attachment". I have other computers with the same configuration in the office and they are working fine. I have uninstalled and reinstalled office, tried upgrading to office xp, still the same problem. Any suggestions please?

The Update Office SR-1 tend to mess up office 2000. After installing Office 2000, do not update it. Keep it as is and your receiving task option will working perfectly. Also if you have any other computer that is also running Office 2000, make sure they don't have Office SR-1 installed. If they do then they won't be able to open task or send task that can be open by other users. I believe that Microsoft kinda gave up on fixing Office 2000 ever since XP and 2003 came out.

outlook cannot do this action on this type of attachment

I have a network of >30 workstations, each running either office 2000 or office 2002 (XP). We started getting this error message a couple months ago, the only way I could fix the problem was to format and reinstall everything. Now it's popped up on 4 different systems:
1. Windows 98 -> office 2000 (not updated!)
2. Windows XP -> office 2002 (not updated!)
3. Windows XP -> office 2000 (sr-3)
4. Windows 2K -> office 2000 (not updated!)

So, on two of these systems, office has not been updated and I'm still getting this message. Could there be a virus going around? There has to be a soultion. This error could be a result of a windows update? I don't think it's from an office update since there are 3 system I have not updated.

Still Having this problem.

After frigging with this problem for a month I used a spare drive and reistalled everything. I have reinstalled Windows xp with sp2 on my computer (new harddrive so the old one is still intact). There are a total of 20 or so computers on our network. Mine is the only one with this problem. This copy of windows xp came with sp2. The other computers that have windows xp were upgraded to sp2 on line. At one point the task requests were working on my old hardrive , but stopped again. This problem is driving me nuts. Is it a sp2 problem. I have not run any of the office updates. If i could run autocad on linux i would so be there right now!!!!!!!!!! Surely to God someone else must be running into this problem!!!! Please any help would be appreciated

thankyou for the input

thankyou for the input, but it still doesn't work. We are not using "Office Supplies/Equipment Requisition Form for Outlook" . I tried to change the mail type to html, plain text, and RTF but none work. I am going to try to install a non sp2 version of windows xp and see if it makes any difference

Good try at least.

I guessed you didn't have the form mentioned, but Microsoft has a bad habit of putting fixes and writing the workaround or fix with other items mentioned that lead people to not try the setting at all.

I have XP SP2 here plus OL2000 in internet mail mode. What do I do to trigger your issue?

Ok I'm up and running again

After much screwing around with my microsoft office I have my tasks working again, which is good because i am trying to get everyone in the office to use them. To recap, my task requests stopped working after i switched to an oem version of windows xp with sp2 on the disk. I tried office 2000 and office xp and the tasks wouldn't work. ( i a not a fan of office xp because excel is really slow with links to other spreadsheets, I pretty much banished it from the office). Using spare drives , i reinstalled the operating system (xp)a couple of times an still had the same problem. The way i fixed it was to instal an older version of windows xp without sp2 on the disk and now it works!!! some other notes over this whole fiasco:
1) I have updated a few other computers in the office to sp2 online and they seem to be working fine (at least the task requests are)
2) At one point when my task requests were not working, they started to work for a day or so. I did an update to office in there some where so i am not sure if that started or stopped the tasks from working.
2) If i could get autocad to run on linux i would tell bill gates to shove his windows where the sun doesn't shineHappy

not just specific to SP2

I'm still having probs with this issue, and it spans from Win98/Office2000 to WinXP/OfficeXP. The only way I could find to fix this, is to format c: and reinstall everything, careful about which updates you install. If anyone can find a better solution....

found the Fix !!!!!! (at least in my scenario)

We are using AVG Free V7, the email scanner is our culprit. the email scanner component of avg should should have an "installed plug-ins" drop-down box, in which "AVG MS Outlook Extension" should be selected, if it is saying "personal email scanner", AVG isn't cooperating with outlook and you'll have to disable the email scanning portion of AVG. I'm not sure if this is effected by other anti-virus programs. I'm trying to find a way to have AVG install the MS Outlook Extension, when I find out, I'll post the solution.

If you buy AVG, then you can get them to admit or fix the issue.

Here's the solution (AVG only)
Apr 14, 2005 4:46AM PDT

you'll have to run the original avg installation file, or download a new one, doesn't matter. Run the install program and select add/remove components -> next until "Component selecion" screen, leave everything selected here, click next to get to the "email scanning" screen, select "advanced configuration" then next, deselect "personal email scanner" and select "Plug-in for Microsoft Outlook", then next and finish! this has worked for me on all our systems, i hope this helps you guys.

Final piece of the puzzle. Fixed!!!!

Solution: Remove AVG

I spent all day today crawling the internet looking for this solution. You found the key. AVG is slightly changing the attachment to the point that outlook can't process it. If you kill AVG, the file goes through clean and works fine.

FYI I'm running AVG 7.

Just relooked at this.

Did you remove AVG's text addition it makes to incoming and outgoing emails?
