Out Of Control PC - Please Help!

Jun 8, 2007 3:16PM PDT

I have an AcerPower F1 PC Running Windows XP Home Edition SP2 (Fully patched)

Only recently, (my machine is around 18 months old), after booting up I am unable to use the PC for a full 10-15 minutes whilst the hard drive is going crazy! I have disabled "restore point" and "indexing service" but to no avail, plus I have run both Windows Defender & Spybot Search & Destroy without either of them finding anything.
I also run Norton System Works & Norton Personal Firewall, and any suggestions to resolve this problem would be gratefully received.

Hi Paul, what I mean by "going crazy" is that the red LED light is constantly on, plus the hard drive is sounding that it is about to explode. When I run Windows Task Manager the most active program is "lucoms1.exe". Does this help?

Many thanks for the link, however, as I am using Norton Security Products, I think it would be best to let this program run.

Hi Bob, many thanks for your post, I had already disabled XP's indexing facility, but this made no appeciable difference.

However, after running the AVG software that you suggested, it found and removed some 20 infections that both Windows Defender & Spybot Search & Destroy had failed to find.

As a result, my PC is again running normally and I can't thank you enough, kindest regards, Ian.

(NT) 20? Any idea how they got on your machine?

LOL, I was kind of wondering that myself

Wonder what "Norton Security Products" were doing while all that was going on. I don't think I would hesitate to disable or uninstall that product and install AVG free.

Good question!

I am no longer relying on Norton or Spybot, and have purchased the full version of AVG Anti-Spyware.

Thanks for your post, Ian.

But as I was not the only user, I have now password protected the machine!

Thanks again, Ian.
