Out in Market for new mp3 player

Oct 20, 2008 11:43PM PDT

Hello All, I have a Creative Zen V plus which has worked fine for more than year and half and now suddenly its screen and music playback has stopped. Though when I connect to computer it recognizes it and I am able to drag and drop files. I tried resetting it and updating firmware but of no avail. So I am now looking for new mp3 player.

1. Flash based player with a capacity of 4-8 GB,
2. Priced under $ 100.
3. I would prefer small form factor with enough screen size that song information is visible.
4. Radio would be added benefit. Photos and videos are not a priority.
5. Most of my song collection in mp3 in 128-320 kbps so support of other format is not that essential.
6. Mini USB port would be a preference. Proprietary port is not needed as I don't have any docking needs.

I am not among the audiophiles and the I think music from my Zen V plus with OEM earphones was pretty good. Till now looking at CNET reviews and prices, I found Creative Zen(4 GB) and Cowon iAudio 7 (4GB) which were around $ 94. I also checked out Sony Walkman NWZ-S716F (4 GB) which came with noise canceling earphone (which was both its pro and con, pro because of its noise cancelling feature, con if I loose it, it would be hard to replace). It was for $128, a bit more than what I would like to spend.

Thanks in advance for your replies guys.

iriver e100 is under $100 buck, I have been using it for 7 minutes. It's not a perfect player but it is cheap.

4GB, has an fm tuner, under $100 (normally $89.99, but I got mine at Best Buy last week for $10 off that price). But doesn't come with nice headphones that the other Somy models have, but I have nicer ones that I use. Added plus for me is that it supports Rhapsody subscription service.

Sony NWZ-E436 battery life indicator
Oct 27, 2008 1:42AM PDT

Hi,

I just got a new player, and the battery life indicator always shows the lowest level. When I connect it to the PC thru USB, within a few seconds it shows that the battery is Full.
When I remove the USB cable, it switches back to displaying the lowest level again.

Does the indicator ever show any other setting, like a half full or a 3/4 full etc. ?
It seems to me that I should be returning this player and getting a replacement

Thanks

does it actually say "full"?

When the battery is fully charged, you will see the word "full" right by the battery indicator bar, which will be in a static state. If it is still "flashing" - the battery indicator is lighting up from right to left, it is still charging.

When I hooked it up to another PC, it worked. After that it has been charging with the original PC as well.

Originally, it constantly displayed the lowest level when unconnected, and Full charge when connected. Essentially, it just refused to charge, jumping directly to the Fully charged state.

But at the moment it is charging fine. Hope it remains that way.

Thanks for your response.

Thinking of buying this player. Does it charge as do other walkman players thru usb connection ? One retail outlet says it doesn't.
Wanting it to load language courses as well as other media

clarification

While it does charge via USB connection, the port on the player itself is proprietary to Sony, so don't lose the USB cable that comes with it. I was thinking maybe that was what the retailer meant.

Good advice, thanks. Sounds just like my NWZ A816 for which I now have a mains - USB cable charger which works well.

Looking forward to enjoying the new device

Cheers !
