Question

Our Samsung plasma TV has sound but no picture

Mar 24, 2017 7:50AM PDT

Our 50 inch Samsung plasma TV has suddenly lost its picture. We were watching a movie and suddenly the screen flashed and went dark as though the TV had been turned off. But even with the screen black we could hear the film still playing. I’ve tried turning if off and on but, although, the light at the bottom of the TV flashes like it usually does when its switched on, there’s no picture at all. The TV is six years old and is definitely out of warranty. But we love this TV like one of the family and don’t want to scrap it. Has this happened to anyone else? Is there anything we can do to fix it?

Likely a board, but without model number, we won't know much.

I can see smoke
Mar 25, 2017 7:02AM PDT

The thought of binning it did cross my mind. But, on a whim and after watching lots of YouTube videos, I opened the back up yesterday to take a look and what was going on under the hood. When I switched the TV on, I could see a light on a part of the circuit board flashing weakly, then a little smoke came out of it. I figured that if I can identify the faulty part I might be able to replace it and fix the TV myself.
