OS X 3.9 Sluggish after an hour or two

Aug 5, 2007 11:03AM PDT

For quite some time this has been a frustrating issue. I have re-installed OS X over and over, yet still, the same problem..

I am running a Power Mac dual 2ghz G5 with 4 gigs of ram. Power PC chip.

After a good 2 hours of being on, sometimes running demanding apps, sometimes not, the computer starts to act real sluggish. The mouse putts around on the screen, apps take a long time to open up and do so in a choppy manner.

I opened up the "processes" utility and the kernel is running at 50% with no other apps running.

Once I reboot, everything is back to normal, nice and fast like it should be the whole entire time..

I searched quite a bit on the web and to my amazement, not many topics on this matter.. Is it just me? Is there anything that might fix this? Do OS X 4.0+ users have this same issue?

I really appreciate anyone who takes the time to respond. This has been driving me mad for sometime and any help would be great!

Thanks!

Isn't there a newer version out for your machine?

Memory Leak
Aug 5, 2007 10:49PM PDT

your machine is displaying the symptoms of such.

Safari was a known culprit for this problem but I thought that Apple had solved that problem.

Make a note of all the programs you are using, demanding or not, and take a look at memory usage. Same place as you looked at processes. The processor will not run any faster when there is not enough memory for the system to swing a cat in. It will continue to process at the same speed but the results of that processing will take longer to appear.

You might want to consider the move to 10.4 and on to 10.5 when available.

Interesting

If it is a memory leak, would it make sense that over a period of time (generally 2 hours) the machine gets to the point where the slugish behavior is noticable? It seems to run great for a while. I usually run Logic Pro 7 for a good 2 hours before it ats slugish. BUT! It also acts slugish when im simply browsing the internet for 2 hours (which I can't imagine tyaking up much resource)..

I am going to jump up to 5.0 when it comes out, I am just praying Logic Pro is going to be compatible right off the bat.

A memory leak
Aug 6, 2007 12:01PM PDT

will take a while to slow the machine down.

As I said, Safari had/has one so even if you think that it is not taking up resources, just surfing the net, it really is.

Try the LogicPro forums for similar problems

Don't really understand why you don't just move on to

OS 10.4.10 (as current) & to 10.5 as soon as it comes out this Fall.

Cost!
Aug 24, 2007 9:38PM PDT

Maybe the OP doesn't move to the latest system and then almost immediately to the upcoming system because it will cost a fair bit?

My father has also noticed some sort of problem with the Classic layer; it appears to stay running even after the last OS 9 application has been quit, still taking up a lot of CPU time and memory.

"the Classic layer; it appears to stay running even after the last OS 9 application has been quit, still taking up a lot of CPU time and memory."

I was under the impression one could force quit such things.

Classic (OS 9)
Aug 25, 2007 7:04AM PDT

If your Classic layer continues to run after the last System 9 application has been quit, it is running as designed.
The easiest way around this, apart from getting rid of your System 9 applications, is to go to the System Preferences, Click on Classic and put a check mark in the "Show Classic status in the Menu Bar"
This will put the 9 icon in the menu bar. From there it is very easy to Quit Classic.
I don't think that Classic was designed to quit when you closed all running Apps.
