OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Delayed

Apr 12, 2007 8:50AM PDT

Apple released an update today, regarding the release of Leopard.

In part it said that they had borrowed resources from the Leopard team to complete the iPhone project.
It went on to say:
quote
While Leopard's features will be complete by then, we cannot deliver the quality release that we and our customers expect from us. We now plan to show our developers a near final version of Leopard at the conference, give them a beta copy to take home so they can do their final testing, and ship Leopard in October. We think it will be well worth the wait. Life often presents tradeoffs, and in this case we're sure we've made the right ones.

Full release can be read here http://www.apple.com/hotnews/

So, for all you folks that ask when they should buy a new machine, or when the new OS will be released, you have an answer.

Waiting Issue
Apr 13, 2007 1:30AM PDT

Seems like the mods and other savy folk's say don't wait for new stuff. If u need it get it. There is always something newer and better coming down the pike. I for one will buy my new Mac first of the year. Not a wait tactive but a financial decision. Cant wait till January Happy

Why wait?

Buy it now with Tiger on it. You can upgrade to Leopard seven months from now. Current Intel Core Duo and Core 2 Duo hardware should be fully compatible with it.

Frankly, it has to do with finances. Right now I can buy that 20 inch beauty. As I'll also will need a new printer and scanner, an all-in-one is my plan. I can buy all, including Apple Care, for less than a quality PC. (I've yet to see where iMacs are more expensive.) Due to a sight problem, I'' also need to pay for the data transfer - for any machine.

But then I'd have to buy the Leopard upgrade. Whether that will cost $100, $150 - whatever, it's something I think about.

However, I did buy a couple of books on Tiger a few months ago. Happy

I appreciate your replies!!!

I'm kinda in the same boat... I was trying to consider if I would buy a new mac using my academic discount before I graduate in May! I still haven't decided but at least I know if I do... to take $129.99 of the money I saved and hold it back for an OS upgrade. Sad

It's always something.

That educational discount sounds tempting. And it would go a long way toward the upgrade this fall.

The decision could be made for me if things keep getting worse. In the meantime, I'll just keep lurking around this forum and try to learn something. Happy

Apple are NOT delaying Leopard, it is still on schedule for a Spring release and spring officially ends June 20th.

If your and ADC memeber you'll already have your Pre-release Leopard kits.

Only a small level of effort (a phone call) would have prevented the posting of this rumor.

Clarification, for those that cannot read
Apr 13, 2007 10:11AM PDT

You, robains, are absolutely correct that Spring officially ends on June 20th but Leopard will be released in June, it will be released in October which, by my calendar, is later than June.

I find it remarkable that you know that this is a rumor. On what do you base your opinion?

I did as you suggested and made a small level of effort and called Apple. They directed me to their website and in particular, to the statement that I post below: You will find the URL in my post, the one you didn't use a small amount of effort to click on.

This from the Apple Web SIte.
Quote:
Apple Statement
iPhone has already passed several of its required certification tests and is on schedule to ship in late June as planned. We can?t wait until customers get their hands (and fingers) on it and experience what a revolutionary and magical product it is. However, iPhone contains the most sophisticated software ever shipped on a mobile device, and finishing it on time has not come without a price ? we had to borrow some key software engineering and QA resources from our Mac OS X team, and as a result we will not be able to release Leopard at our Worldwide Developers Conference in early June as planned. While Leopard's features will be complete by then, we cannot deliver the quality release that we and our customers expect from us. We now plan to show our developers a near final version of Leopard at the conference, give them a beta copy to take home so they can do their final testing, and ship Leopard in October. fact, fiction, or rumors, does it really matter?
Apr 13, 2007 1:43PM PDT

ADC members (developers) get the Leopard early starter kit as we need to know more about the OS than users since we do code for the OS. To get the Leopard starter kit you need to be an ADC member (select or premier) http://developer.apple.com/products/

As for the delay -- I will say nothing.

I do known Vista sales to existing customer base is well below anyone's expectation and recent polls of existing Windows customer base indicate <12% plan to move to Vista within the next year. So the pressure is certainly OFF to get Leopard out the door -- probably a good thing.

June or October is really not relevant.

Get a MacPro, you get your money's worth. You can run Vista (ugh) and WinXP (OMG, ugh) and OSX 10.x.x.

Or live with mediocrity in Windows OS's.

Value is more than immediate. Do you value your time, if you do, get a MacPro now. Leopard will work just fine on it.

Look, Intel basically said to Microsoft F U -- now the spiral of a paranoid company begins with Vista.

Look if you want Windows get windows and spend you life tweaking and making it right. Otherwise, if you an OS that just works and applications for that OS that just work, then get a MacPro -- it really will save you money in the long run.

Otherwise toss your money to Microslop and enjoy you patch schedule and your questions and your.....

Times change, Microsoft failed, their vision and leverage have failed also. June or October so what? $79 for Leopard or $259 for Vista Ultimate -- what gets you from A to B over the next 5 years?

First you say the rumor is false, even though it's fully documented on Apple's website and the news organizations out there.

Then when you were corrected, you say it doesn't matter.

Then you launch into a triade about Microsoft which has nothing to do with the topic of Leopard being delayed.

You sir, don?t seem to be terribly credible. Maybe you should lay off the bad coffee.

Apple delays Leopard until October because of iPhone
By Peter Cohen

Apple on Thursday released a statement noting that Mac OS X v10.5 ?Leopard? won?t be released until October. The cause of the delay? The iPhone.

Now where exactly do you get one of these Pre-release Leopard kits?

I suppose Apple could do business like Microsoft and let the first 20 million buyers be the real Beta testers.

I wonder if the robains ever considered running for a political office.

Having made a definitive statement, he runs all around the houses when it is pointed out that he is wrong.

Of course, he may consider that being an ADC, albeit one without a spell checker, makes his statements automatically true and that we would all just accept his pontifications as fact.
Just as a matter of interest, anyone can become an ADC. All it takes is $499 + applicable tax, 10 minutes of your time, an internet connection and you are set to go. There are NO specific qualifications required.
Available at the Apple site under the Developers tab.

Apple were never trying to get Leopard "out the door" before VIsta. Apple have oft times stated that the release date for Leopard would be in the spring of 07. At least he got that right.

Judging by some of the responses, his launch into a tirade about the inadequacies of Windows/Microsoft in defense of his inaccurate statements was somewhat ridiculous.

Any information coming from this source, regarding Apple, should looked at with suspicion and only taken in with copious amounts of sodium chloride.

Not meaning to run this into the ground, but robains' other statements (including the bizarre, where-did-that-come-from, anti-Microsoft rant) just come across as silly smokescreens to cover up his initial error. Really robains, it's OK! We all make mistakes!

Anyway, it is mildly disappointing that Leopard is being delayed, especially since Apple has been pretty darn good at meeting deadlines in recent years, but I think we'll survive somehow. I think it has to be the most "painful" for those who have been waiting (including those wanting to switch from "Microslop") to buy a new machine until it was released. It still might be a good idea to wait a few more months, especially since there might be some major changes in the included software. Personally, I'm happy that I purchased my MacBook last October. It's a sweet little machine. But even I waited until the Core 2 Duo chip was part of the package. It all comes down to each of us needing to find our own perfect time to pull the trigger.

I might still buy now rather than October if...
Apr 14, 2007 3:39AM PDT

... apple was to come out with iLife 07 this spring. Honestly, I have used 06 to produce several professional pieces including a marketing DVD for a client's book that is being sent out by the writer's agent to movie studios along with book retailers. Considering it is a "consumer" level piece of software, I have found it friendlier and quicker to work with than some pro-level stuff designed to do the same thing.

Still, if iLife 07 is to be set aside until october then I will probably wait to buy a new computer. The double whammy of buying a new OS along with an application suite makes this possible future expense less than appealing.

Is this the best you can do? I hope you got more...
Apr 14, 2007 4:17AM PDT

I'm wrong -- does that help you? But seeing as this is how Apple usually operate I wouldn't think anyone would really pay much attention to the cycle of rumor/deny/announce/rumor/deny/announce -- but I guess you folks live or die by it.

No it doesn't take $499 + tax (obviously you have gone down this road and probably are speaking with more bad information). Actually anyone can become an ADC member, but if you want Leopard starter kit you'll need to pay for the ADC Select ($499) or ADC Premier ($2499).

The tools you need to produce Mac OSX applications are free along with the documentation, Xcode 2.4.1.

Any information from anything on the internet should be cross checked and verified with multiple good sources -- gee, ya think? Is this new news to you?

Aah, the old spell checker attack, you really are limited in the tools you use to make your ridiculous and inaccurate statements.

P, maybe you should run ... away.

Waiting for New Technology ...
Apr 14, 2007 6:42AM PDT

I look at this situation as being no different than the past purchases I made of digital cameras. Way back when, I was one of the first people I knew to buy a relatively expensive 5 Megapixel camera when they first came on the market, even though I heard rumors of bigger and better things in the wind. I reluctantly forked over $1,200 US, but never looked back. By the time the 7 and 8 Megapixel cameras came out, I shot thousands of pictures with my 5 Megapixel wonder. I could have waited for the price to drop below $700, which it eventually did, but I would have missed all those shots I took before the price drop. So if you want to experience the technology of the current Mac, go ahead and buy it. By the time Leopard comes out, you'll already be a Mac Guru and the upgrade will be a tantalizing tidbit of new technology for you to play with.
