Question

OS software or hardware issue?

Aug 25, 2018 4:06PM PDT

Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 12 keeps freezing.

Just booted up my old Lenovo Yoga 12 from a few years ago. I erased all partitions and installed Windows 10 from an ISO file on a USB flash drive and it's been freezing constantly. Sometimes to the point that it's unusable. I've wiped and reinstalled 4-5 times and still keeps freezing so I wiped and reinstalled Windows 8.1 from and ISO file and it still freezes. Once it freezes, everything locks except for the cursor. I can't open or close anything or even use CTRL-ALT-DEL to pull up task manager. Anyone with any thoughts on this? At first I suspected it was the OS but now trying 2 different OS's and still freezing I suspect it could be a hardware issue? Totally lost and don't know where to proceed with this.

Installing Windows is just the beginning.

You have drivers and maybe a bios to update after this. Drivers come from the maker (Lenovo) and not Microsoft so until the work of the post Windows install is done, it may have issues. Windows only gets us to the point where we can continue the work. As always I have to check the maker's site for all the drivers and BIOS.

Thanks for the insight! Took many attempts but a little at a time...sometimes freezing and requiring a power off and back on I was able to update the BIOS and all drivers through Lenovo's support site. Yay! However, the freezing still continues...boo! Any other suggestions or things I need to look into? I recall using this laptop several years ago and not having any issues. It was a work furnished laptop and when we merged with another company, they issued all new equipment and subsequently the IT department was all laid-off so I did not have an admin password which is what prompted me to wipe and do a clean install of Windows 10 hoping to get this old machine running again as a secondary laptop. It's been a few years of non-use but I don't imagine that would do any damage to the machine itself?

OK, time to get under the hood a little.

1. Delivery Optimization. I'd disable this as it's another load. Not usually a cause for lockups but for now it's of no benefit to you. Google Delivery Optimization to learn what it does but for me, DISABLE IT.
Read https://www.howtogeek.com/224981/how-to-stop-windows-10-from-uploading-updates-to-other-pcs-over-the-internet/

2. A minor item. If you don't use Skype, disable that.

3. The SSD is reporting some reallocated clusters which is odd. Look at value 05 and write it down. If it keeps increasing there can be issues with this drive.

4. No temperature issues found but the machine has only been on for 5 minutes since boot.
Be sure to keep up with the usual canned air to the vent cleaning. Google if you need to know what canned air is and for use I suggest just to the vents and Youtubes if you need to know how.

-> The report is very clean otherwise.
