There are some that wish it didn't require a collection like that but your plan looks fine.

I am to do an OS reinstallation (& installation for my new laptop). The catalyst for reinstallation has been a particularly troublesome malware problem--search.us.com.
I am to do a backup of my data, as I usually do around once a month. Additionally, there has been the suggestion of a system backup by removal of the desktop internal HDD, & replacing this internal HDD with a new, fresh HDD. The removed HDD would serve as a system backup, & as external HDD.
I have some questions about this:-
i) chiefly, what happens with the data now bound with the system? In other words, do I have a system (& data) backup, that still contains the malware?
ii) if the soon-to-be-removed internal HDD still contains the malware, then will not any subsequent use of the data copied into the fresh HDD merely transfer the malware into it, along with the data?
iii) most importantly, I am also concerned that the data that has been backed up to the present external HDD may in fact already be infected with the malware.
What is the solution? Any ideas?
