Origami Truths

Feb 28, 2006 2:06PM PST

Guys,

I've been listening for many months, and y'all are usually pretty accurate in your reading of the industry tea leaves. Thus, it pains me to say that I think you totally mis-interpretted the Origami hype. Most of what I'm going to say here comes from episode 29 of Mobile Tech Roundup.

No, the Origami video isn't a hoax, its production values are too high. However, watch the video carefully, and you'll see incomsistencies. Sometimes the jog wheel is on the right, other times it's on the left, for instance. I think what we're seeing is a computer equivalent of a concept car. Nothing more. Just ask yourselves how many computers Microsoft sells. That's right, zero. They're not Apple. Microsoft does SOFTWARE, Xbox notwithstanding.

What we're seeing is Microsoft trying to give the hardware industry a clue about the Gates' vision of the next step. I think it's that simple.

By the way, I don't mean to hurt Veronica's feelings, but the density of Macs per capita pummels outside of California and New York. Please broaden your scope, guys. Happy

Scott

Density
Feb 28, 2006 3:20PM PST

Yeah, Veronica. There's a whole world full of absolutely fascinating PC stuff to talk about. Let's see, 13 new viruses today. Oh, and how about that Windows Vista? It promises to have a real modern OS9 look and feel when it finally ships in two or three years. Michael Dell? Boy, what a visionary! And Microsoft office... mmmm mm, one can't talk enough about the thrill of opening an Excel spreadsheet. Silly

Seriously... when there actually IS anything interesting to talk about in the PC world, our fine BOL leaders are the first to report it. In fact, looks like this is your lucky week because they sure as heck don't have anything good to say about Apple.

Frustrating Day :(

Rather than finding out what all was worth knowing about what was offered, TMV just gave all the PC-bigots fuel for going "Apple is full of nothing but hype" when Apple simply said it would be something "fun" not groundbreaking.

It took me until 8:00pm to finally find an article that touched on the new Mac Mini and what it could deliver with the integrated Frontrow.

Unlike BOL and others, I didn't have a press invite to see it for myself and ask the right questions. I rely upon them to do that. So yes, I'm touchy at the end of this day.

The hype is from higher expectations of Apple, much like Google getting "only" 80% growth. It's just that we expect a lot from Jobs ALL the time, and it IS a little unreasonable. But I like the idea posted somewhere else on the forums that this is just a ploy to de-sensitize everyone so that the next BIG annoucement really does catch everyone off-guard. Happy

PS: I am one of the PC bigots, I don't ever want to use a mac, or OSX. But I recognize my bigtory for what it is, an illogical emotional reaction. I an also appreciate that there are millions of mac users and so there must be SOMETHING good about it, I jsut can't see it. Grin

A new day
Mar 1, 2006 2:08AM PST

It's a new day. I'm over it.

As for any big announcements from Apple, I'd expect them to coincide with Apple's 30th year anniversary which will officially be April 1st (yeah, April fool's day Happy) in exactly one month.

It's become clear that the Origami stealth marketing has come out well in advance of any actual product. Perhaps it was a preemptive strike from Microsoft (who were expecting a new video iPod and/or media Mac to be introduced) to steal thunder from Apple's February 28th ''fun'' products announcement. And perhaps Apple, knowing Microsoft would try to dilute their product announcement, intentionally released relatively minor products at the event, thus exposing Microsoft's strategy and goading them into announcing origami prematurely.

I missed my calling; I should have been an industrial spy. Now excuse me while I tighten my tinfoil.

Also, the density of Macs totally pummels.
