Question

Organize itunes folders by genre

Mar 4, 2013 6:57PM PST

Not sure if this is even possible but if someone has any ideas please let me know.

As of right now my itunes folders in my HD are organize by Artist/Album, per itunes rules.

What I would like to do is to organize the folder by,
Genre/Artist/Album.

The reason for doing this is that I group lots of songs by different Artist into a single Genre, i.e. Love Songs or Soft Rock, Smooth Jazz, etc.

Granted, I can make a smartplay list based on Genre and that will take care of grouping all the songs under one playlist, but if I need to go to my HD to get a song I must know the Artist/Album in order to find it.
Besides, my HD is a mess with so many Artists with only one or two songs in their folder.

I have not found any scripts that will help me accomplish this task. If anyone knows of a script or an app that will do this please let me know.

Thank you all for taking your time to read my post and for any help you can provide.

Organizing iTunes,

"As of right now my itunes folders in my HD are organize by Artist/Album, per itunes rules."

There are "rules" that one has to abide by for iTunes, or is that not what you meant.

Are your music track external from the iTunes Library or are the folders you are looking at, the folders inside the iTunes folder?

If external, then it is up to you what goes in what folder. iTunes cares nothing about the way that you store your tracks, it only cares about how it organizes them inside the Media folder. As long as iTunes knows where to get the track, there is no problem.

If internal, why bother? If you need to find a track, you simply locate it in iTunes, perhaps in a playlist, and click and drag it to the desktop. Done.

Did I miss what you wanted?

Answer
back to play lists

I would think the playlists approach would work well. They can be huge, whatever. For overall organization problems, you have to rely on the stand tools. Suggest trying that harder. You can have overlapping playlists, even exclusion play lists which purposely park some stuff off to side, etc.
