Ordinal 36

Jul 24, 2005 2:04AM PDT

I'm running Windows XP and have recently found a problem with MS outlook. It had been resting in a folder for unused icons on my desktop. When I try to open the Outlook 97, I get two different messages. I'm hoping you can throw some light on this. I did try to reinstall Outlook from my Offic 97 CD.

1. The add-in "c:\progra~1\mcaffee.com\vso\outscan.dll" could not be installed or loaded. You may be out of memory, out of system resources or a missing dll file.

2. Ordinal 36 could not be located in the dynamic link library MAPI32.dll

Yup. Office 97 is not entirely compatible with XP.

No fix is planned, no firm workarounds seem to cure them all.

In your case, McAfee is implicated as well which only muddies the waters more. Why not scrap McAfee as well as Office 97 off the machine and try again with just the Office CD?

Thanks Bob. I did try to do what you suggested but still got error messages. I've taken care of the ordinal problem now but have to work on adding in the add-ins!

I'll spend some time on that.

The add-ins seem to trigger the issue too.

But many get the basic Office 97 to work and the addins fail. Can you go get a compatible OS?

Bob, I can get the program to work but I have to click out all of the add-in error warnings first, which is a nuisance. I like everything to be tidy. When you say a "compatible OS" do you mean a different Windows version? It took me a while, but I finally learned to like WINXP. I also love Outlook and there's the rub. IThey worked together for well over a year. I'll just work with it as it is. I have my addresses and merge list in Outlook and I'd hate to have to type all that out again!Sad

Thanks for listening. Val

For me that would be Windows 2000 Pro.

It's not all that different from XP from my perspective. And is still available if you ever need to just stick with 97 for a few more years.
