Folk will prove me wrong but the reason is simple. The way optical packetizes the data you sometimes get a lipsync issue. Now there is some leeway but if you had 2 audio streams then there would be ZERO leniency and you would now be screaming about the stadium echo effect.
Yes your old TV did it but today, there's a reason you don't see this anymore.
I recently bought an LG 32LF580V. It seems I have to choose between speakers and optical output and can't have both. On my old LG TV I didn't have to choose if I wanted optical I'd turn on surround and mute the TV.
My surround I use to play music whilst playing games using the TV speakers. If I'm not doing that I'll use the surround for TV. Its annoying having to switch is there away to enable both like my old TV?
