Optical Mouse Problems

I decided to try a Optical mouse on my ME computer, but it acts crazy. At first I thought it was the mouse so took it back and got a MS Optical Mouse. Same thing. It flys all over the screen and jitters at the side of the screen. If I use a mouse pad it works fine. My computer desk is shiny polished wood. Its not a solid color but has heavy graining. I have tried many different surfaces but get same result. I know several people who have optical and use no mouse pads. note, The first mouse had software but it worked much better without the software. Do you think a piece of contact paper in a dark pattern on the desk surface would work?

Just FYI. I don't install mouse drivers. Ever. This is my choice and I never have the issue you noted.

The Microsoft mouse didn't come with software but acted just as crazy, maybe worse. I was hoping to get rid of mousepad. Sad

Try this.

Boot to safe mode and remove what mice you find in Device Manager. On reboot it should detect the mouse you have connected.
