Optiarc DVDRW AD7200S & Vista

Jul 17, 2010 12:53AM PDT

hi,

please help! my PC is now 15 months old. after 6 months i was getting freeze ups. manufacturer helped me flash BIOS and check HDD. i also opened the case and ensured all cables were secure.

i checked device manager and this is the message that was coming up:
The device 'Optiarc DVD RW AD-7200S ATA Device' (IDE\CdRomOptiarc_DVD_RW_AD-7200S_________________1.0B____\5&3afaca79&0&1.0.0) disappeared from the system without first being prepared for removal.

along with cdrom code 15 errors and atapi code 11 errors. after securing cables all went ok... for another few months. just before warranty was due to end, i bit the bullet and sent machine back.

they eventually could replicate fault (huh? why couldnt they see error codes?)but didnt know the problem.

eventually, i am told, they swapped out MB, cables, DVDRW all to no avail and finally said it was a faulty HDD, which they replaced, tested machine and sent back.

all seems to have been well since end april until yesterday, when i saw the symptom return - HDD stays on constant, error are in device manager, same as before (see above).

i flashed the DVD firmware this morning and all seemed well until an hour or so ago... so here i am again.

its not started freezing yet, but no doubt it will escalate. any ideas? its doing my head in :o(

Let's do a little search.

I'll try VISTA CODE 15.

http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/936523-optiarc-dvdrw-ad7200s-vista-drive.html is found and it appears it's a cross posted.

The added clue is the 350 Watt power supply. Let's see what else is in the box? Can't find it.

Given only the supplied clues it looks like the usual overtaxed power supply or a driver issue.

Sadly, the posts you made never reveal what machine this is so that's all I can offer.

upper & lower filters!
Jul 19, 2010 11:49PM PDT

hi bob,

yes, i have been touting myself about as its such a frustrating problem.

since posting, i rang tech support of company that built machine. its generic, btw... http://www.cube247.co.uk/?gclid=CL3U4P-d-qICFUUA4wodfBS3iQ built by these people.

the guy was gobsmacked, to say the least. he suggested perhaps a Vista update had squewed things and suggested system restore. i tried 2 times but PC on rebooting informed me the system restore had been unsuccessful. however, for the rest of the day, the HDD light behaved. on looking closer, i found that on boot up the cdrom had failed altogether!!

so.. did some more digging and tested the regedit theory of DVD's dropping off.

i cant remember the actual getting there in regedit, but basically you get to the cdrom/ dvd bit and delete lower & upper filters? i only had upper filters, so deleted.

touch wood, so far (5 hours later), it booted, it found the DVD drive, the HDD light is not on constantly, and i just put a disk in and all is well!!

so here's hoping!!

thanks for looking :o)

That sounds more like the CODE 39 issue.

The fix for the CODE 39 issue is what you described but other CODEs have been reported as well.

The usual causes are CD/DVD EMULATORS, iTunes, DVD REGION FREE tools and uninstalling certain CD/DVD softwares.

code what??? lol
Jul 20, 2010 1:01AM PDT

hi again bob,

is that a code 39 fix? ok :o)

well, i have had PC's for years, mostly built myself and i've never had this. i've used iTunes for ages too, on older PC's. is it this drive particularly, Vista or just a quirk? i'll report back to the tech guy if this fix holds... maybe charge them for the info!!

thanks again

These CODE issues.

Are sadly well known to those that deal with vanishing drives. If you type VISTA CODE 39 at google you find out more but the codes you noted didn't give me a clear pointer to the CODE 39 and related code numbers.

And yes, I wish Microsoft would just automatically fix a CODE 39.

Sad News
Jul 21, 2010 7:05AM PDT

hi again,

well sadly, after my triumph yesterday, i'm back to no DVD drive again. and going into the code 39 fix (the regedit one?), there are no upper or lower filters to delete... so i'm back to trying to find out whats wrong.

i'll open the case tomorrow and give all cables a severe push and telling off... hope that does the trick :o/
