Opinions on Fujifilm E550, Kodak LS753

Mar 8, 2005 3:38AM PST

We are close to buying our next digicam and would like your opinions about the Fujifilm E550 and Kodak LS753 cameras. What are your experiences, good or bad? How much did you pay? How do these perform in day-to-day use? I consider myself a serious amateur moving slowly from film (15+ yrs exp.) to digital (2+ yrs exp). I want good quality print, some control with exposure, but also convenience and ease-of-use, all for around $350.

Either camera will be easy to use when in Auto mode.

At first look, these two cameras appear to be about equal.

But look a bit deeper and you find that the LS753 does not have the manual controls that someone with your experience would want.

The E550 has Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority and all the other controls you need for controlling the exposure.

The Fujifilm E550 and the more expensive Fujifilm F810 have exactly the same electronics and lens assembly.

These two cameras were released at the same time to cover two different price markets. The F810 has a metal body and the E550 has a plastic body.

Some people think the E550 has outdone its more expensive brother.

Here is a review of the E550:

Slow flash cycle?
Mar 9, 2005 1:41AM PST

Thanks for your thoughts and the pointer to the review site. I really like the E550's specs, except for the "leisurely recycle time" for the flash. I expect to use the camera for many indoors snapshots, which often call for fast successive flash shots. Do you know of a comparable camera with a better flash recycle time? Can the E550 be set to compensate (ISO settings, other presets?) so it does not have to rely on the flash to capture good indoor shots?

Flash Cycle
Mar 9, 2005 6:48AM PST

The Kodak DX7440 has one of the better cycle times for flash. It also has one of the shortest shutter lag times, so quick snapshots are easy to get.

It has all the manual controls too.

Here is a link for a review:

The DX7440 is 4 meg, 4X zoom.

In February, Kodak announced the Z730 camera.
Which appears to be identical to the DX7440 but it has 5 megapixels. There has not been any reviews of the Z730 yet. It will be May before it is available for purchase.

Regarding your question about ISO settings.
All digital ameras with manual controls will let you set ISO and other exposure controls.
