Question

Opinions of unknown company requested / Thank you!

by EmilyDiana / May 18, 2012 10:47 PM PDT

Hi everyone,

This is my first post to the forum, so it may be in the wrong place. Sorry.

I have been computer (laptop) shopping for a while now, and keep coming back to a particular machine.

Please take a look at this link and let me know if you have heard of this company/store (not HP, but the store selling it). Please share as soon as possible, any comments on your knowledge of the company and/or any experience with them, good or bad. Thank you very much. Happy

I have never heard of the company, so am concerned about a first purchase from them, being this costly an item. Their price for this machine is the lowest I have found, beating Staples' and other stores after-rebate price by almost $50.00 . Am I right to be concerned this may be a case of, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is? Thank you for sharing your opinions and personal experiences with them.

Answer
I think you were wise to ask.

Looking at their Home Page at http://pcgamesi.com/ I see in their "About Us that they say their business address is 515 Lampasas Ave, Sacramento, CA, 95815 and phone no. 1-916-649-3522

I don't know the US telephone numbering system from here in the UK so perhaps you can tell if that seems genuine if you are in the US.

But when I search for 515 Lampasas Ave, Sacramento, CA, 95815, United States in Google Maps, it finds 515 Lampasas Ave, Sacramento, but all I can see are residential apartments. They don't look like a business park or similar.

Google Maps link;
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=515+Lampasas+Avenue,+Sacramento,+CA+95815,+United+States&hl=en&ll=38.614138,-121.45272&spn=0.013883,0.01929&hnear=515+Lampasas+Ave,+Sacramento,+California+95815&t=m&z=16&layer=c&cbll=38.614951,-121.454023&panoid=_pIN1eordvn6KO85aCdDvQ&cbp=12,1.58,,0,0

If that link doesn't work for you then try Google Maps yourself for the address above.

However, perhaps the more telling detail is a Whois Lookup. I tried two Whois Lookups.

Whois is what the word says, Who is xxxx?

I tried http://whois.domaintools.com and http://www.networksolutions.com/whois-search to lookup pcgamesi.com and these are the results;

http://whois.domaintools.com/pcgamesi.com

http://www.networksolutions.com/whois-search/pcgamesi.com

They both say that pcgamesi.com is registered to this address;

Rousse, Rousse 7000 BG

A Google search for that came up with a place called Ruse in Bulgarian.

Google maps link; http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Rousse,+Rousse+7000+BG&hl=en&ll=43.834527,28.026123&spn=6.56154,9.876709&sll=38.614959,-121.454029&sspn=0.013949,0.01929&hq=7000+BG&hnear=Ruse+Municipality,+Ruse+Province,+Bulgaria&t=m&fll=43.834527,25.927734&fspn=6.56154,14.0625&z=7

Now I can't be sure that's right, because of the different spelling, but BG is Bulgaria's country code. If it is right, then their web site makes no mention of that.

If this were me I would find some other well-known and recognised source.

Thank you.

Thank you for replying, and for the work you did to help answer my question. Happy I would not have thought to use Google Maps for an address check. And I don't know enough about Whois to use it. (Yes, I am computer/technology-challenged). Plain

Along with asking here, I messaged Facebook friends about the company. None had heard of them, but some red flags went up for them, as they had for me. Between those red flags and your response here, I crossed the company off my list for a possible purchase. I cannot take risks like those, on a purchase of this price.

I kept watching sale ads and websites, and a few days ago, ordered my laptop from Office Depot. After HP's $50. rebate, it is less than $20. more than the price the unknown store offered. That is definitely worth it, to make sure I get my laptop and do not lose hundreds of dollars.

Thank you again for your reply. I appreciate the help. Happy

Note to my fellow c/netters: Laptop and laptop-related questions will likely be coming. Wink

I hope everyone is having a nice holiday weekend. Happy

Why is there no payment methods available?
by LuisRuiz_2012 / July 16, 2012 4:54 AM PDT

I'm trying topuchase a home theater system and there is no payment methods available for the checkout process. It's really irritating me as this is a present for my parents before I leave for college.

Given this and the above.

Maybe a local store is best or even Amazon.com?
