Everyone has an opinion.
If Cnet wants to turn their site into "twitter for twits" that's their business.

Leave the forums set to Adult mode.......plain vanilla.

Start with the ability to read and post.....anything else is an extra.

Keep the extras to a bare minimum.

All well and good. There are ways to get around this mess, AKA customization. But we shouldn't have to!! The pages are totally cluttered.

There are ways to keep all of the functionality while minimizing the intrusiveness. Even something as simple as combining 5 lines of icons and links into 2 makes a dramatic difference. Here's hoping they can tweak the formatting a bit to streamline access to the forums content. However, I will continue to use customizations to do things that exist beyond the forums - widening the content to with the browser, removing ads, et cetera.
