You are however entitled to purchase the restore media and that's very cheap compared to the alternative.
Just like your car keys. You own the car but are not entitled to free keys when you lose them. You pay a small fee for the replacement. The car analogy works here.

PS. Where to get replacement restore media? Try compaq.com or hp.com and if they are out of stock then look on ebay and places like http://recovery-cds.com/
I bought a new top-of-the-line compaq computer in 2002, which was a pentium 4 1.5 processor, 40 gb harddrive, 512 ram, and had windows XP on it. I was still fairly new to computers then, I replaced the hardrive because of a failure on the original drive, and bought a 80GB drive. What I didnt realize then, I lost my windows XP operating system.
I borrowed my sisters copy, and of course when I try to register they said it was a "pirated" copy- because it was meant only for my sisters computer. I have tried contacting compaq, they said my computer is now too out of date for them to help. Microsoft wants to sell me windows XP for 140.00!! Yet everyone tells me I am entitled to a copy of it because I bought this computer new in 2002.
Any suggestions, or am I just out of luck?
