Opera newbie questions

Jun 16, 2010 7:24AM PDT

I just decided to try out Opera. Second or third thing I tried to do was reset the home page, and couldn't find anywhere to control that. Then I saw what appear to be clues that you must have an Opera account in order to get into the browser controls. Fair enough. So I tried to sign up, went to the page where I had a choice of either Log On or Sign Up, clicked Sign Up, and filled in my name and e-mail in the blanks. The third blank just said Password. How can I fill in a Password when I don't have an account yet? But I tried by filling in the Password I intend to use, but when I clicked, I went immediately to a page that said Forbidden.

I don't see any other way to sign up. It certainly isn't intuitive. So how is it done?

Not sure why you need to sign up

I don't use Opera myself but I would guess that the option to change the Home Page will be in Tools, or Preferences somewhere.

I doubt you need to register somewhere to do this.

Not hard

Click the Opera logo on the left end of the toolbar, then Settings, Preferences, General. Set home page there.

No need to register.

More Opera questions

So far Opera seems to be living up to its claim that it is fast. I might change over. But. . .

Is there a way to import favorites (bookmarks) from IE8? Or from IE8 to something else to Opera?

Is there a good newbie guide in Opera itself, or somewhere online?

Thanks.

Importing.

Yep, seems not too difficult. Opera has guidance on this itself here;
http://www.opera.com/support/kb/view/427/

For Bookmarks you can also read Favorites, but I would suggest a different method as searching for IE's Favorites is not particularly easy. So;

1] Open IE and click the Favorites star.

2] In the left hand column, where it says "Add to Favorites", click the pull down arrow and select "Import/Export".

3] Follow the prompts to "Export" IE's favorites to a location you know you can find again. I would usually choose the Desktop.

Close down IE and follow the Opera guidance.

For more Opera tutorials, see the "Tutorial" link in the right column on that Opera web page.
