Opening the 17-inch C2D iMac

Feb 28, 2007 1:32PM PST

I've only had my iMac for a while and I'm already regretting the configuration. Does anyone know what you have access to once you take out the screws on the bottom or know of any tutorials? Thanks

what is it that you are trying to "Configure"

Once those three screws at the bottom are undone, they are captive bolts and should not be removed, you have access to everything that is inside the machine. If those bolts are removed, it is usually very difficult to replace them correctly.

You cannot change the processor, there is no room for another drive (optical or hard), RAM does not require the dismantling of the machine and you won't find a graphics card to fit.

What is it that you want to change about the configuration?

Well that's a bit dissappointing. I guess I can live with the processor but I was interested in adding another drive, the RAM I've already dealt with, updating the graphics card and the Airport card to support 802.11n

Depending on how old your iMac is and what version, Apple are offering a firmware patch that will take the existing airport chip, I don't think it is an actual card, up to N speed. There is a small charge for it. Check the Apple store.

As for the drive, suck it up and get yourself an external Firewire drive. Either put one together yourself, purchase the enclosure and then the drive, or get an off the shelf one.

What sort of processor where you thinking of installing in the iMac?
Just curious.

You didn't have a Windows machine at one time, did you?
