Opening pictures or video clips

Sometimes, but not always, when I get an email with pictures, I cant open the pictures although the rest reads fine.
Likewise when I forward an email with pictures to a friend they can't open the pictures although I could.

My computer guru friends have suggested that everything from antivirus settings to firewalls could cause this but nobody really has a good answer that works.
