Opening files

by Tara / March 29, 2004 5:28 AM PST

I recently purchased a new computer (Dell Dimension 2400) with XP operating system and Word Perfect 11 program. My old computer (HP Pavillion) had Windows ME and MS Works V6.0. I had copied my old files onto a disk and loaded them into the new computer and have encountered many problems (and many different pieces of advice) when trying to open these documents. One piece of advice was that I would have to install the MS Works onto the new computer in order to open these files. Unfortunately, I either lost the disk for it or it is part of the system recovery disk for the HP which I obviously can't load onto my new system. Is there any other way to open these files (I pared it down to about 8 files) without going out and purchasing a version of Works that I will never use again? Thanks for any help.

The program you want is a free converter from Microsoft. It is called "wp6rtf.exe"

Here is what MS says about it:
The Works 6.0 Converter allows you to convert word processor documents created in Microsoft Works 6.0 to Microsoft Word and other Works programs. Specifically, this converter works with Works 2000, 4.5, and 4.x, and Word 2002, 2000, and 97.

I found this by just going to the MS Office website, and searching for "reading works files in word"

Here is the webpage where you can read more, and get the converter (if this link fails, remember you can find it as easy as I did by searching just like I did):

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
