General discussion

opening e-mails

Jul 11, 2007 5:12AM PDT

When i recieve an e-mail through OE6, and there is an attachment, i double click it, but it opens in an XML editor. And when there are numerous attachments for that one e-mail i cannot open them. so in short, I am asking how to reset the attachment opener so it opens as an OE message.

Thanks

What type of attachment?

And do you have a background virus checker that scans your emails?

I ask about the virus checker because the one I have, AVG, splits the emails into components that look like attachments when it scans them, but really they are just part of the email.

Other attachments, eg PPS files, Word.docs, Excel files, etc, should open up in the appropriate applications.

Not good

Usually when you get a .eml attachment, it's the result of some kind of email worm/virus. Opening them could well infect your system with this worm/virus.

You should ALWAYS be careful with EVERY attachment you get in email. Personally, I delete all unexpected email attachments sight unseen. If someone just forgot to tell me they were sending an attachment, they can send it again. And even when I'm expecting the attachment, I always manually scan the thing with a virus scanner. I never rely on automated scans when the email is being downloaded or anything like that.

It may sound a bit much, but Outlook Express, and it's big brother Outlook, are like a dream come true to virus writers and spammers. Combined with rather less than impressive security in Windows overall, and you really can't be too careful.
