Question

Opening Certain Links/Tabs Closes Chrome

Apr 13, 2018 9:44AM PDT

Essentially what the title suggests. Right now, when I open certain links or tabs, Chrome closes itself. When I click restore page and try and click the same link or open the same tab, Chrome closes again. I'm pretty sure there are some issues, but I don't know what's going on.

Any help is appreciated!

Which Link?

As Bob asked above, it would sure help to know which links you're having issues with.

And does the same thing happen when you use another browser such as Internet Explorer or Firefox?

Known Links
Apr 15, 2018 6:11PM PDT

Currently, clinking on the link for resetting chrome settings will close Chrome (and IE and FF). Other links that will close Chrome randomly include opening Rogue decks on disguisedtoast.com as well as opening a XML asset folder in File Explorer on my computer. Those are the known ones and my computer also randomly buzzes, freezes, and restarts as well now.

This new clue tells me
Apr 15, 2018 8:35PM PDT

That the PC has other issues and it's not a Chrome thing.

Are you keeping up with the usual canned air to vents, fans and heatsinks? Sometimes you find an owner that never did the work.

...Tried running Chkdsk?

Specially if you're running Windows 10, it seems as though the Windows 10 "upgrade" process may not install all the files correctly, or maybe they're damaged, or maybe something else, but running Chkdsk has fixed quite a few of these minor glitches. Try running Chkdsk in "repair" mode to find any damaged files and correct them. Start by opening a command prompt as an admin. RIGHT click on the Start button, choose "Command Prompt (Admin). (Or type "Command" in the search line, then RIGHT click on the "Command Prompt" listing at the top, choose "Run as admin".) Once there, type chkdsk /f /r /x, leaving the appropriate spaces between the letters as shown, then press the Enter key. You should see a note that it can't be run till a restart is done, type "Y" for yes, then press the Enter key again. Close the command prompt and restart the computer. Chkdsk will run upon restart and will take quite a while to finish.. Don't panic when the progress bar stays at 10% for a long time. It's fairly normal and the Chkdsk process may take a couple of hours.

When it's finished, it will boot to your normal startup/lock screen and you can login normally and then see if things are working correctly again.

Hope this helps.

Tried CHKDSK

CHKDSK did not run after I restarted my computer.

Recent video and malware scan links are also closing Chrome now and it's really getting annoying.

The clues are pointing to PC issues, not Chrome.
Apr 18, 2018 7:35AM PDT

CHKDSK might help but it not running on the next boot is only expected if the command did ask you if it should run on next boot.

Also I found that if Windows has pending updates, the CHKDSK might not run. It's a bit of a mess but for now, I do not suspect Chrome to be the real issue.

Successfully ran CHKDSK, a few un-openable links now work for the moment, will update if there are further issues.

Issue still persists.

Clicking certain websites (especially when trying to download Farbar) still closes the browser window. Recently, my GPU usage randomly spikes, causing frames to drop. I suspect it's a BitCoin miner of some sort mining on my PC but I haven't found a free solution to stop it from doing so. This is really frustrating as it drops frames for streams, websites, and, most importantly, games.

EXACT same problem as mine
Apr 22, 2018 3:57AM PDT

Wow! I also have the same problem as yours. I also play hearthstone as well and search for decks in the internet that can help me in the current state of the meta. Which then leads me to the problem. While searching for meta decks in disguisedtoast.com and also hsreplay.net as well, clicking on rogue decks closes my browser as well (Chrome, FF and IE). Even googling the word "rogue" closes the browser immediately. I want to find the solution as well, because it bothers me a lot. It also happens with other sites as well (I don't know if it has the word "rogue" as well or other word and phrases causes my browsers to crash). Did you already find the solution or is it still occurring on your side? I would try CHKDSK for now as suggested by the comments in this post.
