RE: get it to open maximized

When Internet Explorer opens it can range in size anywhere from that of a postage stamp to almost filling the screen. Clicking the maximize button works for that particular window but the next time you open IE the same situation repeats.

The default behavior for Internet Explorer is to open at the same size it was at the last time it was closed. While the default does apply in many cases it's not always consistent. Try the following workaround.

Open a single Internet Explorer window to the smaller size.

Drag the corners of the window until it completely fills the screen. Do not use the maximize button to enlarge the window.

Hold down the Ctrl key, keep it depressed, and using the mouse click File and then Exit on the menu bar. Do not use the "X" in the upper right corner to close the window.

Internet Explorer should now open in a full window.
If it still opens to a smaller size repeat the above instructions, substituting the "Shift" key for the "Ctrl" key.

Still problems with IE 6 window size and toolbar settings
Mar 11, 2005 4:22AM PST

I am having the same problem. I had found this exact answer at

http://tinyurl.com/2stwa

but this method does not work at least it's not working for me. A second part of my problem is that the toolbar does not retain the settings I set. The IE window opens in the middle of the screen and the toolbar reverts back to showing No Text Labels, has the Links Bar that I don't want shown and moves the Google Bar back to the bottom of the toolbar.

The following site offers tips but they also don't work:

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/ietips.htm

'See-Odd Toolbar Behavior & Opening Internet Explorer Full Size'.

I don't want the window to open Maximized just Full Sized with the toolbar in the same form as I had set it.

Things work fine using the first fix above but reverts back after rebooting. Need to know how to keep these settings saved so they will be the same when I next turn on my computer.

Is there another fix anyone knows about?

TIA

Best regards,
Don, Toronto

Found the fix

Finally found the fix at least for my system and it may help others.
For me using HP it was a problem with their utility Auto TKit. If you have a Hewlett Packard system and are having this IE Window problem go here for the update. It works.

Valuable lesson learned.

1. The original question was: "when I try to open a window in IE 6 (windows 98SE), the window opens at half size. how do I get it to open maximized?"

If a user wants IE to initially open maximized, they change the properties of the IE's shortcut used to open it. The only options are: Normal window, Minimized, and Maximized.

2. The problem with the instructions at your provided link #1 doesn't track with my experience. What ever the shortcut properties are set to, IE should always open that size -- except in those cases where the default for a Normal window has become something else for some strange reason. A user should become suspect if they see such options change after a computer boots and they know they did not initiate a change.
