"Let's say if I log on to my Hotmail website to read the messages without downloading any of them."
Sorry, but if you read a message, the text of the message has been downloaded.
"When I find a mail with an attachment, can I just open it right on the server's site?"
No such feature exists.
"By doing so, if this attachment contains a virus, will it infect my computer bear in mind that I have not downloaded this attachment at all? This thought has puzzled me and I do long for some advice."
Here's the deal. Attachments are best tossed if executeable or of unknown nature or from nobody you know. Notice I used "OR". Any item on that short list is just deleted. Pictures and such are safe.

Thanks.
