Open Office

Oct 31, 2005 8:48AM PST

I have installed Open Office which seems to have taken over my text documents - docs I created in MS Word are now appearing as Open Office docs and some, which are password-protected, can't be opened. How can I get these back into Word?
TIA
David

David, others may have better advice for you, but I...

have uninstalled Open Office (latest version)from my system completely.

I run win98SE with 256mb ram.IE6 as well.
I have microsoft word 98 also.And dialup.

Although part of my reason is I am having troubles with my computer - not connected with this program - but found it difficult to work with, lack of understanding on my part probably.

Openoffice was slow to open as well.
I did not have password protected docs either.

I did have trouble opening some of my earlier word docs though.
If I could they were 'scrambled' with symbols etc.
Although sometimes I would be able to change these to 'normal'- accidentally - don't ask me how, I have no idea!

Anyway, it is easier for me to just revert back to simple - but easier to use - word.

Good Luck!

Options...

It sounds like OpenOffice has become your default program for what are traditionally MS Word files. (OpenOffice does this by default unless you uncheck the option(s) during installation/setup.) At this point you have the option of leaving OpenOffice as the default program, and just open certain files in Word, or reset Word as the default program for .doc files. To just open the document in Word, right-click the file, select "open with->choose program," select Microsoft Word from the list, and click OK. (You can also do this by opening Word, then going file->open and select the document you desire.) If you want to have that type of document always opened in Word, after selecting Word from the menu, check the box that states "always use the selected program to open this kind of file," then click OK. From then on all your .doc documents will open in Microsoft Word.

Hope this helps,
John

I'm very comfortable with MS Works word processor, and when I try to open the password protected file, I get the following message..
"Works cannot open........ The file may be in use by another application, the file format may not be supported by any of the installed converters or the file may be corrupt"
However, I am able to open other files this way....
