open files-file extention help

by Kaywill / January 30, 2009 6:41 PM PST

My computer did a complete reload/reset. I lost everything!
I found a few files hidden but cannot open them like .lbl & many others. (photos, documents etc.)(I found one program for opening most office files from you...openoffice.org...thank you!)

I do not know how to open these. It says it cant open the file & then takes me to Microsoft but they show programs you MUST BUY.
Are there any FREE programs that automatically find the correct program to open ANY file?

I note many say "free download" then want you to pay for a program to continue. I know my computer had the correct programs when these files were made. But I have no idea where the program came from or went?

Please help.

Geez . . .

Did you read the red Note above where you typed this question? No mention of your OS, what you mean by reload/reset, and exactly what happened.

Take your car to a mechanic and tell him it's making a funny noise. Will he fix it?

OS- XP SP2
Presario v600 laptop

Computer reset...went back to "factory settings" w/o known cause. Microsoft says it is a problem w/ the XP program & I need to save all I can & reset the computer again w/ XP disc.

I want to recover ANY & ALL THINGS before I do this. Including the hidden files & added programs like Office8 (included on computer when purchased but no disc)

While doing a "search" I found some hidden files not erased completly but I cannot open many of them due to the programs (like office8) being erased. How can I fix this w/o a disc?

What is the best way to save EVERYTHING BUT ORIGINAL MICROSOFT PROGRAMS before reseting the computer? (I do not want the microsoft XP problem to carry over to the reset computer..causing the problem to appear again!) I understand resetting the computer will replace all original microsoft programs.

I hope this gives you the info you need to help. Thanks
