oooPPPPSSSS....forgot logon password to get into win xp pro

by geekmech / March 22, 2007 3:59 PM PDT

I reset the windows logon password for my wife on her laptop. She used the computer after I reset it. She hasn't used the computer in a month and now forgot the logon. I cannot remember the logon because I never use her laptop. I know I'm a DUMMIE for not writing it down, but what to do short of reloading xp?

Safe Mode

Easyest way is to reboot the computer in safe mode (usually press F8 on startup) then just login as the new user and change password then reboot

What 'New User'?
by Grif Thomas Forum moderator / November 12, 2008 9:16 AM PST
In reply to: Safe Mode

Even in Safe Mode, a password is required IF the various users have created a password.. There is no "new user" as you describe although there can be a hidden "administrator" login in XP HOME.. If the computer owner has created a password from the hidden "administrator", there is nothing "new" to use.. On the other hand, IF the hidden adminstrator has a blank password, then it is possible to use the "administrator" login and simply leave the password line blank. But that's a big "IF".

Hope this helps.
